Which subs are better?

I am new to this and i bought a used system off a guy and put it in my truck. The subs i have are way too big so i sold them and i want a single 12 sub. Future shop came out with this deal for an exile 1000W 12" with a sealed box for $199 or i could buy a used alpine type R 12" for $100 and build a box myself. Which is the better deal and i also only have an 800W sony xplod amp. Should i upgrade this as well?
Thanks

I'd stick with the type R and build your own box to specs
100 bux for a sued type R isn't a great deal but still will sound better in a properly made box than the pre-fab

DylanMX 10-25-2008 05:20 PM

Well how long do you think the sub will last. Im afraid of buying the sub and it lasting 2 months. Im not sure how long subs are meant to last or how to tell how good of condition they are when buying them. Also what about the amp situation?
Thanks

liv2ride 10-25-2008 05:38 PM

subs do not have an expiry date or length of use on them.. If you know the person your buying it off (which it doesnt sound like you do ) you would know how he played it. but since you do not, its kind of a buy as is basis, but if he says it works, then it prob works !

DylanMX 10-25-2008 07:19 PM

No i dont know the guy. Found the sub on kijiji. What would be a reasonable price for that sub? I though $100 was maybe what it was worth used. I know that a box that is built to spec for the sub is important but what if the box that comes with the exile sub is built to spec? It would save me some time. I would like to know sub for sub which would sound better. I think i would prefer the alpine but if used is almost just as good as new i guess it doesnt matter. I still need some advice with the amp situation. I know the amp cant handle the max power of the sub but can i do any damage running that sub with that amp?
Thanks

$100 for a ABused sub is a great deal.... for the guy selling it....

go new with a warranty for the one speaker that is most prone to abuse.

andrewsfm 10-26-2008 12:31 PM

Don't go with the FS deal. Negotiate with the guy with the Type R down to $80 or so, but only after you know the condition of the surround, or preferably buy new.

ndinadis 10-26-2008 08:01 PM

if your not against waiting a little bit I know that you can find the type R for around $100US online, I would prob pick it up in the states rather then ship here but I am pretty close to you and it is about $30 shipping. Not sure if I can post the sites here but you can pm me if interested.

The type r is worth 80 new, so used for 100 is not that great of a deal, they are good sub, as for the amp, you dont have to change it, if it works fine, just build a box to have more ouput for less power.

I'd love to know where to get a new one for that price. I need a third to add to my setup.

LOWTONEZ 10-26-2008 11:01 PM

Anyone can get it for the price, you just have to have something called patience and the right connections. Dealer cost is not the cheapest of all cheap. I get products sometimes 50% less then dealer cost and with full warranties.

Alright, now how about a real upfront answer, if you have one?

Anyone can say they can get a brand new JL 13W7 for $300, but that doesn't mean I'm not just talking BS...

LOWTONEZ 10-26-2008 11:15 PM

Ok well lets see i have always had at least a 5000$ stereo in my car and never paid more then 1200. Right now i have my most expensive system ever, 14 speakers, 3 amps, 2 subs, all 0 gauge wiring, speaker wiring upgraded, huge battery, kenwood deck, alarm, starter, and sat radio, and all the goodies and knick knacks you need. Just my monoblock and 2 subs without box retail for 1300 plus tax. I got these 3 items for 400. My customers pay the same price as i do, i never mark up anything i sell to my customers, i charge only for installation.

andrewsfm 10-26-2008 11:20 PM

Okay, so you're saying you can produce a Type R for me or the original poster for $80?

LOWTONEZ 10-26-2008 11:23 PM

Yes i can, i said anyone can, i am making a point, look at yuli, this guy throws incredible deals on this forum, for new stuff too, is he at a lose? , I would hope not.

brianb 10-26-2008 11:33 PM

Ok I will take two!

andrewsfm 10-26-2008 11:59 PM

I'll take one as well. Where do I send my shipping info?

LOWTONEZ 10-27-2008 12:04 AM

Am i installing it? If not, no dice.I am not doubling my shipping charges, you want one ill put it in for you, and give you youre warranty card. I have to eat too. And thats why i keep my business local. I might not charge markup but i have to make my money somehow.

andrewsfm 10-27-2008 12:12 AM

So you include the product mark-up in the installation. Makes sense.
Then how much would you charge for just the item itself?

MR2NR 10-27-2008 12:30 PM

I would think that if he is acting as a vendor, he should pay to be a vendor on the site like the rest of us.....

Yuli throws incredible deals, you bet, he also pays to be a vendor here....

LOWTONEZ 10-27-2008 07:55 PM

I am in no way a vendor... get that straight, and i am not implying any sales through any reply, im not an idiot, as i was merely making a point. I am an idependent business owner with rights to voice my opinions and services in any manner. If anyone comes on the site saying they are selling an amp new or used, they must be a vendor then. So they should pay aswell. To andrew, when i have a customer come to me, i oly charge them for installation of the product no mark up what so ever and for the item price on its own, well everyone else will jump on my back, so i wont touch that one. As for the Orig poster, go with the exile as you may regret the used purchase later on.

liv2ride 10-27-2008 08:36 PM

^^^^^^ LOST Cause.. dude, wow 5 G's of equipment for 1200 $, G . 4 . U .. sure, your a dealer, you get at cost, we dont care lol.. if the two users who asked for a sub lived in sudbury, then it would of been smart to say you can get them a good deal if you install it for them, but you had to explain it through like 10 posts to get the msg across.... waste of a thread ! when the guy only wants to know if he should buy new or used.. and no wonder people think you should be paying to be a dealer on this site, you JUST tried to sell brand new subs through your company.. how is that not being a dealer.. you did for everybody to see also. anyways lol.. doesnt matter haha

LOWTONEZ 10-27-2008 08:55 PM

I did not say i pay cost. i wouldnt ever pay cost, you can get cheaper than delaer cost, and i was merely saying the sub new can be had for 80 bucks. I did not in any way say...Hey come buy a sub from me. Second i know they dont live in sudbury and really i dont care if i get their business or not. The whole point of my post to the other user was to merely tell him he does not have to pay 200+ for sub that can be had for 80 dealer or not. Finally people start threads looking for advice and other users will go on the threead saying ooohhh i have a sub for 50 whatever dollars let me know. They must be a dealer too.My opinion was told to the original poster about what to do, which i changed in a later post to something else, then everyone went stupid on something i said, which happens all the time to various users and there goes your typing war. I will finish by saying i have giving my advice, everyone else should do the same and get over it. Or close the thread.

veeman 10-28-2008 11:22 AM

well i got mine for 79.00 each on ebay a year an a half ago...with shipping, taxes/duty(shipped as a gift), exchange and brokerage fees (canada post)...total was 205.00 cdn....and it had warranty...from joe blows stereo shop on ebay (which I haven't needed..knock on wood). So, it can be had for 80.00 with warranty, brand new. In Canada the cheapest I've seen them is 189.00 each about a year ago...best buy sale i think.

The Wizard 10-28-2008 11:47 AM

Well this has been entertaining to say the least, and helped kill some time for me at work. By the way, I bought some used 0 guage wire from you, so you absolutely must be, have to be a dealer, lol, kidding, kidding.:smilie_da

DylanMX 10-28-2008 11:55 AM

Hahah thanks guys!
I think im just going to sit on it for a bit and get a better deal
I dont think this guy is moving on the alpine
He thinks its worth $350 new :S
So ill jut wait a bit and im sure a deal will come my way
Thanks!

Father Yuli 10-28-2008 02:19 PM

type R is much better

but $100 for a beat up one? If it was free I'd probably consider it. Otherwise not a chance.
