Subs Magnet

this might be a stupid question but if i don't ask i won't know...

what does the size or weight of a subs magnet really say about the sub ?

JordyO 05-29-2006 07:05 PM

Nothing really.... quality/type of magnet means a whole lot more. Not to mention the quality of the moving parts. :smilie_da

just out of curiousity, what does the type of magnet have to do with it?

the only thing that matters is the magnet's interaction with the voice coil and the flux produced as such. whether it's a ceramic, strontium, or neodynium magnet doesn't matter; only the flux field does. if it's a 4 tesla magnet, it's a 4 tesla magnet.

although the use of a neodnyium or strontium magnet can help cut down on mounting depth ;

what quality should one look for or is recommended ?

Well... he was asking about size, and you can get a lot more out of a smaller sized neo motor than a ceramic motor. So, in that case, having a smaller motor can mean it's a better/strong sub. So how does it NOT have to do with this? :dunno:

ok, what? in that case, it simply means that it has a stronger flux and fringe field than the same sub with a ceramic magnet of the same size. it doesn't actually mean it's a better sub. in fact, we could even argue that it might make it a worse sub because of the decrease in Qes and the increase in Fs (of course, this depends on what you're looking for specifically). most people do not like the sound or behaviour of a low Q, high Fs sub as much as that of a high Q, low Fs sub.

the type of magnet is irrelevant. the flux field doesn't know if it's neodynium, strontium, or ceramic. the fact that a speaker has a neo motor doesn't mean that it's any better; it simply means that it worked best for that application (all marketing aside). there really is no way to tell if the magnet used is suitable without looking at a BL curve or knowing in-depth about the subs existing gap geometry and the flux/vc/magnet interaction.

these are all generalizations; perhaps the best thing to take out of this conversation is that looking at the magnet alone will tell you very very little.

^^which i think is what JORDYO was getting at!!

well, i'm not trying to be argumentive, but he said that the quality/type of magnet matters. the type of magnet doesn't matter at all.

Yes it does.
Different types of magnets have different qualities, like weight, strength etc..

ok, you have one sub with a 4 tesla neodynium magnet. the other has a 4 tesla ceramic magnet.

with the exception of the mounting depth and speaker weight, what has changed? nothing about performance at all.
