Subwoofer: Alpine Type-X or FI SSD
I was planning to buy a 10" Alpine type-x because of the small enclosure and 1000Watts RMS. I did come across a FI SSD 10" which is 800watts RMS. The sub is tempting because it has a shallower mounting depth than the alpine and needs a smaller sealed box.
Any feedback on either sub? |
I only have experience with the SSD.
Works great, a few nice options, it'll take a clean 1000watts. Works great and has the potential to get pretty loud for being their entry level sub. |
Can't go wrong with the type x, still one of the best sounding subs I've ever heard. However, they are expensive and fairly deep, which can be a problem depending on your install requirements. As far as Fi is concerned, they are highly rated and appear to be well made, but I have no direct experience with them, and their website is pissing me off as they have no info for their Fi Q and other subs which I've been interested in. All it says is, "coming march 1st 2010"...hello,it's the 17th. At least put the old info there for now, until the new stuff is ready.

I was actually curious to see the specs and info on the Q series. Hopefully it gets added soon.
I'm not that worried about the cost of a sub. More on the quality, depth and enclosure size requirements as I'm trying to wedge this in the corner of a hatchback without taking much space. The Alpine will stick out a little more than I want but if it is a much better sub then I will go with that. Or maybe I can find a different name brand. Researching sucks. |
The SSD doesn't need a smaller sealed box, where'd you read that? Maybe it was the older model, Fi says they changed it on March 1st. FS/31 & QES/.35 = "This speaker can be used for either ported OR sealed enclosures." Don't buy the Alpine, it has 81dB sensitivity, it's fairly quiet although it sounds fine (I didn't like the way the cone sounded in any of the applications) and is better suited to sealed enclosures. I've heard lots of them both 10's and 12's and they are just straight crap unless you're going completely SQ, they're too quiet for me. If you want to save space and have more bass later, get something like a Digital Designs 9510G and give'r 1500 watts in a 1.5 cf3/35hz tuned ported box, installed right it'd be plenty. You can find used ones for like, what, $250? Every other person has an Alpine type-X and thinks it's the shiz, and they pay like 2k for 2 subs + box with a 3 month warranty, LOL!

I say get the FI. They are unreal subs. I know you mentioned money wasn't a big deal but what's the harm with a little extra cash in your pocket. The SSD works great and will for sure get loud off 1000W.

I want to know how much those Fi X's will be, hopefully $65 like the last time, was those on sale? I'd buy 8 of em if they were like the Dcon's.

Sealed box: H-Qts .2-.6 cuft No way am I wasting the space for ported box. I've had two 12" Infinity Kappa subs in my old car using a sealed box which took up half my trunk. They sounded good. Definitely shook the car more than I needed. |
well, others you might be interested in looking up that I have had experience with and wouldn't hesitate to use again are: ID max excellent overall, JBL GTI (very long depth) but my favourite hands down for SQ and output, OZ matrix elite again a great overall sub, and for good overall performance at a good price...Alpine type R it's rated at 500 watts rms, but easily handles 800-1000 daily...at least mine did for 3 years, and it sounds really good with all types of music. I'm interested in trying the Fi Q, but if that site doesn't have info soon, I'm going to try something else...maybe a Morel ultimo 12.

alright it appears those other guys are into boom..if that's what you're looking for then there are other brands that get louder with less power. If you're a little older and want really good SQ with more than enough volume to irritate most people, then those suggestions I made are all worthy candidates.
