Those companies (RE, eD and Adire) are able to product application specific products because of their lack of company size.
Just like Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin don't spew out mass-market products like Ford, GM and Chrysler, the products they do create are application specific.
For a large company to come up with a 'monster' product, the sales and marketing staff needs to be convinced by the product guys that it will be worth the extensive investment.
It is also much easier for a small company to complete such a product. They don't need to deal with ISO900X compliance, environmental compliance, 100hour power handling testing standards, quality assurance, quality control, marketing, advertising and on a lesser scale - pensions, retirement plans and other personel-related items.
They call up a 'builder', tell them what they want, get a sample and give it a go. If they get another better idea, they implement that in the next product. A big company has to restart the approval process from square one.
Anyways, that's my opinion of an answer...

My take is this...
The larger companies are a part of corporate america, and a good deal of thier product (IMO) is inherintly based around marketing and what will sell... not necassarily what will work better... they spend big bucks on R&D, custom parts, advertising, promotion, ect... and it dosent necassarily make it a better product... (the product may end up overpriced with mediocre performance)
I also agree that the 'basement brands' are less expensive if you consider price vs. performance in most cases... if youve taken HS buisness class youll probably understand why....
The other thing I wanted to ask is what 'brand name' maufactures parts or assembles thier product here in the USA or Canada ????????????????
You may support an R&D (marketing) team and the rest of a corporate money maker here on the contenant... but what about ma and pa speaker builder ????
I always hear alot of guys saying 'support your local shop' I wonder how many local shops support products assembled/built/designed in N.america by the 'little guy' (even if he does use off shore parts) ???
I know of a place that wraps voice coils in the USA, but I dont know how many manufacturers (big or small) use them or other parts made in N.america...

Rockford manufactures their woofers in Michigan...they wind their own voice coils even. Rockford has a brand state of the art r&d and manufacturing facility for 2005.
They also are the #2 volume sub/speaker manufacture in the world. (behind pioneer).

^ I dont know to what extent.
To quote the press release:
"Our search led us to South America; specifically, the country of Chile. Chile is a land with large metal reserves (iron, aluminum, and copper)" And
"we have formed strong relationships with the top foundries, casters, and magnet suppliers in all of South America. We now have the ability to produce full custom drivers - down to custom tooled and cast baskets"
From that one would get the opinion that they are able to produce custom parts.
Also the majority of these small woofer companys dont really order parts and build them in there basements (lol).. They order complete drivers from companys like TCsounds etc..

I think Tim is talking more about the average street pounder car, more so than the SPL competitors etc. MTX subwoofers are manufactured in the U.S. The economies of scale say that you well get better performance for less price if something is mass produced, which at first looks like very large companies like Mitek, Rockford Corp. and Directed would have an advantage, but at second look if every internet company is buying from one large build house that may not be a big advantage. To me I like the fact that there are brick and mortar stores that carry the well known brand and I can get service right now in person. I will let others "experiment" with the little known companies and one day if that little company has a local brick and mortar and they establish themselves I would then look at them as a choice for me, but not until then. Anyways, I don't know what the big deal is with subwoofers anyways, they only reproduce a tenth of the musical spectrum, and really any decent sub at $100 is good enough for 99% of the people out there.
well i know im new to this but im kinda in the middle cause when i bought my deck over the net i had lousy service. it took them forever to get it out to me. but as forthe basement brands i have no comment as for i have never delt with one of these companys. as for haveing an item shipped over night form a big box store thats BS casue i paid the extra bit for a rush delivery and it still took them like a week to get it to me. and for warrentys from a big box store they offer next to nothing for theft protection.
