Subwoofer Repair

Has anyone here done a subwoofer repair before? I blew the voice coil on my Alpine 12inch type R and would like to get it repaired. Thanks for the advice.

if i am not wrong i dont think alpine makes recones for there subs sadly.

They don't. But there are aftermarket ones on ebay. Do you have to do a complete recone or can you just change out the voice coil somehow?

you have to do a complete recone, the only way to get to the voice coil is to cut away the surround and the spider. you would be better off looking into some new gear, something a little more re cone friendly maybe.

I've actually taken it apart. All i had to do was peel up the surround from the basket. The rest came intack. Cone, spiders and voice coil. Was just wondering if i could cut the voice coil off the bottom spider and glue another one on in its place?

No, you cant do it like that. The coil has to be perfectly centered. There are places that will recoil it for you with new wire but its costly and is not always the right impedience.
I'm going to agree with bj, you'd be better off with better subs, alpine uses very small gauge coil. I can talk you through rewiring it yourself as a svc at 1ohm. pm me if interested.

get some incriminator audio subs, not bad in price and are farely decent sub with a dealer here in bc. Or just something that is not mass produced and you will be way happier. Incriminator, ascendant, powerbass, dc audio, all better if wanna be able to recone if ever blow another one again. I did 2 12's myself, just watched a couple videos on youtube took my time and they seem to work perfect.

Ya i just wanted to repair it if I could do it cheap. I didnt really want to go out and spend $300 on a new sub. I just need something in the trunk for a little bit of depth, doesnt have to hit hard. Im not going to be cranking it or entering any competitions.

Thanks,

Matt

then just for some depth you can pick up a sub for around $150-200 i would imagine. Incriminator audio 187 or powerbass 2xl series both not very pricey.

Also, recoiling a sub takes practice. Its easy after the first few but you're likely to make mistakes on the first one.
