I'm buying my girlfriend an MP3 deck for her birthday and need to find something that'll look flashy in her car. It won't be running a big system or anything so cosmetics are the main factor. (High preouts, security features and stuff arent important, just has to look pretty and sound fairly decent) Something with features like a 3D display, or motorized face etc would be ideal. I've looked at a JVC KD-LH3100 and Sony CDX-M800. Not the greatest decks I know, but they look nice and thats what she wants. The high end Panasonic ghost deck would be great but its a bit out of my price range. Looking to spend ~$300 and I'm' open to online/ebay buying. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

I see build quality and reliability aren't on your list either ;)

Maybe a Kenwood MP522 or MP622, the 622 has the changing colour background, something my gf liked.

"Flashy" sure wasn't what I was thinking of when you said you needed a "nice looking" deck...

Rather, it made me think of one of my pet peeves... HU design is generally atrocious.

I had the worst time myself, trying to find an MP3 player that also had a quality CD unit and D/A converter with the basic features that I want (I don't like bells and whistles), that also had an ergonomic layout, that didn't look like the starship enterprise.

Unbelievable time...
Most manufacturers, the more entry-level lines were a nice, conservative black finish that matches well with the black plastic in my dash - and most people's dashboards.
Unfortunately, as you traverse the model range, the higher models come with a spraypaint-silver finish, that wouldn't match anything in most cars...
Granted, some new Nissans, and the special-edition anniversary VW GTi come with some silver dash adornments, but these are the exceptions, not the rule.

To me, it's like selling car rims...
Entry level ones coming with chrome and silver finishes, but as you go up the range to rims that have better features, less weight, etc... they only come in orange.
Not a lot that they would compliment.

That's how I feel about these head units...
Silver spray finish?
Sure, it stands out in the dash.. is that a good thing?
Maybe in today's world of tack-on aluminum wings, bolt-on universal mufflers, and bright colored velcro seatbelt pads [proclaiming "powered by.."] that's considered stylish...

But I was actually forced to traverse no higher in Alpine's model line than the 7894... fortunately it DID have the features I was looking for, reasonable ergonomics, and a chassis that was understated and looks nicely integrated in my dashboard.
Same drill for my Pathfinder... same head unit purchased, largely to avoid the headaches, the pain, the frustration of realizing that head unit manufacturers are lemmings, just lemmings...

Check out the clarion 835mp. It is a nice sounding deck, looks good, and the layout is nice.
