Super Noob Needs Help.

i bought a 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i and the speakers and CD player are good in it but i need subs.

so my questions i guess are:
  1. Should i be looking at a 2Ohm or 4 Ohm Sub im not sure the difference between the two.
  2. Should i be looking at getting a sealed box or a ported box.

if someone can go to www.visions.ca and point out some good subs and a amp to go with them, i don't really need something that's super pumping but something that gives a good pump that still sounds good.

If you wanna put in any other info i'd be happy to hear it.

the ohm of the voice coils depends on the amp you get what size sub/subs would you like? what kind of music do you listen to and ported rules!

Dyno69 06-24-2008 06:58 PM

im looking at either 2 12's or 2 10's not sure yet and i listen to a little of everything but i like hiphop and rap and my buddy who's with me 24/7 likes his techno and rave stuff.

1 12" in a well built box would be great. but i dont know if you know anything about building boxes. or if you have someone that can build a good one for you.

1 12" eh...ya not very good with building boxes, you cant buy a good built box? i know you pay a premium but im sure somewhere in edmonton i can get one built by someone whos got good rep.

for techno i find that a sealed box sounds better because of the really fast beats. ported makes it sound really sloppy.

Jo-Psyko 06-24-2008 08:10 PM

if its sloppy the box is no good... yeah alot of stereo places will build a box for you. or you can always just buy prefab. i run all ported boxes and i listen to metal and punk, they aren't sloppy when done right

ryannow 06-24-2008 08:40 PM

but even on home stereo speakers where the box was built and optimized specifically for the speakers, it still sounds sloppy to me. maybe i'm just picky.

well then ni think the ported box is for me cause i hate techno and cant stand when my buddy turns it on, so if it sounds sloppy he wont wanna listen to it no more :) so what type of sub you think i should get,
something like this 2Ohm or this 4OHM? is kicker any good, alot of people i know talk about the Alpine Type-R's too.

i might not get it from visions but there a good way to see what i can get in my city

Jo-Psyko 06-24-2008 08:52 PM

like before . the ohm you choose depends on the amp you choose and yes kicker makes good stuff and the alpine type R's are good as well... and that means alot coming from me because i hate alpine, but right now in my car is a single 12" type R and it has done 146.7 db so i mean really....

Dyno69 06-24-2008 09:12 PM

My Bad about the OHM Thing i dont know much about subs and amps but im looking at that kicker sub or this Type-R do i need to get a 800 Watt amp or a 1500 Watt amp to power it and what about the speakers in the car already do i need a amp to power those or will they still run the same way?

Jo-Psyko 06-24-2008 09:24 PM

the others will still run the same. something around 1000w would be great for an amp.

Dyno69 06-24-2008 10:11 PM

Cool thanks for all the good info, what does the amp hook into exactly, im just wondering for warranty purposes if the installer does something stupid and hooks it up wrong and it messes up something i just wanna know what could go wrong. i know it sounds odd but with the car having a 5 year warranty dont want something to go wrong and have to spend alot of money outta pocket

avidedtr 06-24-2008 10:58 PM

Some car manufactures can claim if your electrical system fails they can void the warranty if they find a system. - Ask around here for a reputable installer in your area and make sure they are insured. Power to the amp connects to the battery and ground connects to either chassis or the ground on the battery. Ask the installer if he's worked on your model year of car before. Also take photos before and after just in case the installer breaks a panel and tells you it was already like that!

Will do thanks alot, off to bed, everyone who has input please put it here im hoping to go pick stuff out sometime in early july.

Wow i didnt know 1000W amps were so expensive lol that will be the brunt of my cost.

Dyno69 06-25-2008 01:11 PM

So ill be looking for a Mono 1000W Amp and not a 2 Channel or 4 Channel amp?

Jo-Psyko 06-25-2008 02:11 PM

well you dont need 1000w hahah umm what kind of money are you looking to spend? for the whole system? you'll have to forgive me part of being into SPL is that to me what most call loud is total crap hahahah but then again my car does 147db and i think thats to quiet! hahaha so yeah shoot me a ballpark price range you are looking for.

Dyno69 06-25-2008 02:22 PM

im looking at 1,000 at most for the parts and then whatever installation costs and i wanna get the most DB for my money i guess.

Jo-Psyko 06-25-2008 02:23 PM

you can be done up pretty good for $1000. thats about how much my entire system in my car right now was including the deck... but everything i have is used hahaha.. ok let me do some looking.

Jo-Psyko 06-25-2008 02:29 PM

ok something like this would do....

amp - Best Buy Canada Web Store: Car: Car Audio & Video: Alpine Mono Amplifier (MRP-M1000)

sub - Best Buy Canada Web Store: Car: Car Audio & Video: Alpine 12" Subwoofer (SWR-1222D)

there something like would be pretty good just have a good box built for it. the type R subs do really well thats what im using for the time being and its doing the 147 of a big amp.

Dyno69 06-25-2008 02:41 PM

awesome thanks alot ya i dont need a deck i like the one that comes in my car works great.

Jo-Psyko 06-25-2008 03:29 PM

yeah and that amp has hi level inputs so you wont need anything extra to hook it up to your factory deck

Dyno69 06-25-2008 04:09 PM

Thanks for all your help, i'll talk to a few of my buddys see if they know someone who can make me a good box for that.
