Who can give me a site that I can down load a 100hz (approx) test tone from? I need a tone with at least 10 seconds of continuous output levels.

Thanks guys, hard to keep on top of things when I am working alone right now. I have a Rockford amp 1001BD that has blwon 3 times on my customer. Each time it is the output section and one time the power supply that smoked. The amp is powering two dvc 4 ohm 12's in a sealed box, final load is a series / parallel circuit of approx 3.6 ohms, well within the capabilities of the amp. Checked each coil on each sub, no issues, checked the speaker wire, no issues. It is not the subs causing the problem, power and ground are fine, this leaves the input signal to look at. Factory head ---> EQS ---> Epicenter ---> 6XS --- amps (1001BD and 4 channel Rockford which has had no issues at all). Got me stumped so far.

That is a wierd problem, which is why I like it! (shut up Dukk)

That is a busy signal path, could there be a piece between the CD software and the amp that has gone unstable or is ringing? Rockfords are pretty solid units.

Hey... nice link JRace...
(someone should stickey it)

MR2.... If you ask me... if he was overdriving the amp inputs it would sound distorted... and chances are it would not cause the outputs + power supply to fail while operating at 4ohms....

One 'secret killer' Ive encountered are tinsel leads that intermitantly short out on each other or the sub basket as the cone moves in and out.... Id check the subs playing free air and watch out for sparks !

I thought about that secret killer and checked it. The tinsel leads seemed to be fine in free air (even with aluminum cones which are a great conductor). Rockford tech support seemed to think that it was the input stage but it just doesn't sound right to me. Any input is appreciated.

Installed the amp again, this time I bypassed everything and started from the EQS, no problem, added in the Epicenter, no problem, replaced the 6XS (3rd unit) as the first one I received was DOA and the second one was from the same lot. Reset all gains as the EQS and 6XS are also line drivers. Seems to be working fine for now, tested for 2 hours at lower volume levels and all is well. At higher volume levels remains to be seen. Previosuly the amp would smoke within 15 seconds of a good does of the volume ****, pop a 70 amp fuse instantly and the magic smoke was seen escaping. No such genie has escaped yet this time.

Just a heads up, you probably know this already, but the NCH test tone generator generates test tones at a -12 db level. Not 0, so they're are definatly not good for gain setting.

Here's a pic I found where the two were compared.

I use cool edit pro to generate test tones. You can adjust the levels to whatever you'd like, set fade in and fade out , throw in a modulation frequency etc, etc...
