tuning system

ok, i wanna kinda perfect the tuning on my current setup...it is as follows:
clarion db-245 deck
stock speakers running off deck
profile california ca600m amp
concept ex-12 sub
the features on the deck are very limited(bass/treble boost, fade) along with some z-tune thing to enhance bass and magna ex bass or something... the only tweaking i can do on the amp is gain, bass boost, and crossover.
i currently have it set to full bass boost, halfway on gain, and 85hz on the crossover. the deck has like +3 bass boost and ztune set to bass enhancer with the magna ex thingie on.
im pretty sure that this isnt the best tuning for the sub to be running at optimum performance...but im not quite sure what to change... dont bother suggesting buying any new parts, as i will be buying a whole new system in a few months, but for now i gotta work with what ive got

I'm thinking you're right......

First, set all amp gain and deck EQ controls back to the default or "0" positions.

Leaving the X-Over alone for now, first set the amp to work properly with the deck. Unplug the amp and using material you know well, (preferably on a CD) turn the volume up on the deck until you hear the speakers starting to distort. Turn it down a notch or two until the distortion stops. Turn the volume off, hook up the amp with the gain still set to minimum and turn the volume back up to the point you found earlier where the distortion was gone.

Now you can set the amp gain.....I'll warn you now, this can be tedious and time consuming. If you have a buddy to help you out, it can make it quicker.....he can do the **** twisting while you sit in the car and listen. Start the track playing that you used for the first part, turn the gain on the amp up a small amount at time until you hear your sub start to distort, and back the gain off until it goes away. You may have to replay that track a few times until you get it right.

At this point, you are already getting as much clean bass out of your setup as you can. Anything you add to this in terms of EQ (bass boost etc.) will make your amp clip before the rest of the speakers reach their maximum output. You may be able to listen to a certain amount of distortion in the subs (especially if they are trunk-mounted) without it sounding too bad, but keep in mind that you will be shortening the life of one or all of those pieces of the puzzle by doing so.

Larger bass will require changing something....either the sub, amp or box....
