Type R Sub - how to tell if a coil is fried

So I'm shopping for an SWR-1022D.
I'm wary of people trying to sell me a sub with perhaps only one working voicecoil out of the two.

How can I test to ensure the sub is in perfect working order? I've never owned a sub with a dual voice coil, so please forgive my obvious ignorance.

Any other things I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

take the impedance reading from each voicecoil...it should be the same impedance for each(within 0.1) if one is drastically different from the other, one coil is on the way out. if one coil doesn't read anything, it is fried or the lead is severed somewhere. if it is your first dvc sub, then you should know never to play music on just one coil, have both coils hooked up at all times....wiring diagrams can be gathered from alpines website for free...

Give er the old sniff test as well. Burnt VC smell sticks around for quite a while. I'm not sure on those whether u can see the VC windings, but look with a flashlight. If they are black they are burnt

Also if you do a continuity test (the buzzer setting on the Digital multimeter) the 2 coils should be separate from each other. I've fried 2 10" alpine type-r's and the both had a short between the 2 coils.
