Last weekend I had to go set up my GF's parents home theater...they had gotten a full 5.1 setup from a place called Brault & Martineau. (A Quebec chain).

They sold them a few unnecessary items..one of wich was a 200$ bulk pack of the RGB cables for component in that came with a holw bunch of upgraded speaker cables... the speakers came with there own scrawny, yet very functionnal speaker cables.

I told them to return it since we already had all the cables.

Well they called back to make sure they could return the "bulk pack" and just get some RGB component cables. Well they said that the stock cable wont last for more then a few years and that you will be able to hear resonnance. Then they add that it is there audio specialist that said so.... what a bunch of bull.

The amp has a big sticker on it that says 100watts x 5, so maybe 50watts rms per channel (I doubt its even that much)... increadible sales tactics.

Same thing happened with my dad at FS. They sold him like an $80 Monster optical audio cables and the sales guy assured him that this was all he needed to hook up the DVD player to the surround sound. (hi, pictures would be nice?)\

I had him return it and picked up an RCA brand one from RadioShack for $20.

I know some of you audiophiles might think that the Monster brand cable would be a lot better but my dad's already got hearing aides. I doubt he'd notice a difference between ANY audio cable ;)

Yeah they made them get an optical cable and a "balanced monster cable rca" for there subwoofer... I didnt tell them to bring it back since you figure that since ou already paid a lot for the hole thing, might as well get upgraded cables..not that it would make much of a difference. But I draw the line when it costs 100$+ hehehe. They take advantage of people.

And also, How in the hell do they expect these same people to hook all of that up? Its funny..

It sounds like the shop sold them a cable pack that maybe they didn't really need but it never hurts to use a decent cable.

And in home audio the manufacturers can't put 100x5 on a receiver if it won't do 100x5. It doesent have to be able to produce 500watts but it does have to achieve 100x5.

^^ alot of manufactures rate the recievers with only one channel driven. With all 5 driven the output goes down.

Paul Niwranski 08-10-2004 01:14 PM

That's why I said it has to do 100x5 but not 500w.
