Upgrading speakers
 

I am thinking of upgrading my speakers and was wondering if i need another amp for that? I already have a kenwood mono amp and a 10" sub, would it make a difference if i get new speakers? Some stores told me i needed another amp but some said i don't, so which one is true? Thanks.

Why would you need another amp if you are just upgrading speakers?

Before deciding to upgrade your speakers, you should ask yourself why you are doing so in the first place? For what reasons do you want knew ones? Is one or more blown? Do they sound distorted? Do they get all muffled? When you get new ones what kind of sound are you trying to get out of them? Something run-of-the-mill that will serve its purpose or something a little more SQ oriented?

Sometimes when you turn it up, its not that clear so I thought it might be because I have factory speakers and factory deck . So if I get new speakers would it make a difference? I have a 07 civic.

You've basically reached the limit of your stock system. You have a few options, all of which are building blocks to a better system. 1. change the speakers, listen to them util you want more. 2. add an amplifier to really bring the system to life. for this you'll need an good high to low level converter like a re-Q or JL clean sweep etc...These will take you stock head unit's speaker output and re-equalize it and step down the voltage to an RCA low level amplifier ready signal. Essentially giving you aftermarket cd player performance from your oem unit....or 3. change your head unit to an after market one.
As you can see, you don't have to do it all at once, you can, but you don't have to, and none of the steps are a waste as they lead to the next level if so desired.

unless your headunit offers you crossover control, i would start there. ...and i doubt it does.

as said above, get yourself a aftermarket deck, or if you aren't going all out, just get an OEM interface such as the cleansweep etc.

you will be much happier with the performance of your speakers being able to filter out lower frequencies. thats is afterall why you have the sub.
this will let them play louder, cleaner, and keep a stock appearance in your dash, all without breaking the bank. (these interfaces offer much more than just crossovers as well, just do a little research on them).

if you still plan on upgrading speakers, you don't NEED an amp. however in my opinion you would be wise to get one. the stock speakers/headunit are pretty well matched, if you upgrade without upping the amps, then you are just going to be limited by a weak headunit.

i'd say first get a oem interface. if you are happy great! if not,
get yourself a small two channel amp and a set of respectable front speakers.
(forget rears until later and spend twice as much on the fronts)

I too am going to recommend that you start with replacing the cd player. It will provide you the opportunity to expand your system at a later date. It will have immediate effects on improving your subwoofers output and the overall output of the stock speakers.

Next upgrade your front speakers, then the rear. As was already pointed out, you do not need an amp unless you are seeking to get the sound louder. If louder is part of the equation, then most certainly you will require an amp to make this happen.

what kind of speakers should i get than that would be good for my sub and amp? if i buy speakers that are too powerful it the system will sound worse without an amp right?

i wanted to get a deck but if i do i would have to change the dash. i have a 07 civic, the only way is if i get a dash kit and change it but it doesnt look that nice after u change it lol i guess i'll change speakers and see how they sound... good i hope =p

It will make a difference indeed if you replace the speakers. That said though, you can have the most powerful speakers in the world but you are still only putting the same amount of power into them. It is the starting point however though, the first of the building blocks. Upgrade the front speakers first, with sound deadener as well. Next you can upgrade the rear speakers. Third, you add a proper interface adaptor to allow you to expand the system easier and provide a rock solid output for your subwoofer. The subwoofer will notice an immediate difference. Next step is going to be to add an amplifier and deliver some power to those speakers. That will bring the system to life for you. Come up with a budget for things and I will come up with some great equipment for you.
