Use 4 or 6 12's?
 

For a daily driver, going in an 00 Sunfire, I want to put either 4 or 6 Eclipse SW8200 12" woofers in it (2680W or 4020W). I'm hoping I can fit them! So, I have a few questions...

Should each chamber be sealed? (A little airspace or a solid enclosure?)

Has anybody ever worked with multiple woofers in a small trunk? (J-Body)

Is using 6 subs kinda pointless?

Eclipse recommends .5 - 1.5 cubes. What kind of difference in frequency range is that? I'd like this setup to handle the lows especially, so would I be sacrificing something if I used 6 12's in 5 cubes verses 4 12's in 5 cubes (that's 1.25 cuft each vs. .83) ?

I could even use 6 in 3 cuft, but I'm not so sure I'd want to give them the minimum recommended, as I've been told, smaller boxes allow more power and larger boxes have better low end response.

Has anybody ran it through Winisd?

Which way should I face these? Can I face a pair of them to or away from eachother or will it cause cancellation?

Say I use one box, can I face them towards the rear, but have the subs that are closer to the back seats inverted, still facing the rear, or does that cause cancellation?

Does anybody have specs for these? I can't find any.

These woofers, even with a third of their RMS move a shitload. The Xmax is 38mm, and I'm almost sure it's using all of it. If we gave them RMS power, would they move even more, or would they just tighten up and get louder? I don't think they can move anymore than they are already, these things pound with few watts, and they even have a horrible efficiency of 81dB/1W.

My friend already has 3 SW's, we threw 2 in a sealed dual chamber box in his Eagle Talon, each getting +/- 375W and it's loud and sounds great but we want more. The other day we hooked up the other SW in sealed box (both boxes are about the same size), and 3 woofers were way better than 2, all 3 only seeing 250W, a 1/3 of their RMS. Is it okay to use two different sealed boxes that are within .2 cuft of eachother? I was worried that the excursion would be all different, but it wasn't visually, and for what I noticed they sounded the same. Can my amp get messed up from doing this? The amp never got hot. After listening to some bass heavy songs my ears were ringing, so I can't wait to hear 4 or 6 of these LMT's on RMS power, it will be a full back massage.

Does anybody want to throw out some SPL numbers for 4 and 6 of these (crappy and good install)?

Also, my amp has a slave/master amp switch, what's the difference, other than it only works when it's on 'master'.

Go with one twelve that will handle the same if not more power then though subs...plus it will be much easier on your amp. if you go with all 4 or 6 subs if they are on the same amp you can share all of them to one chamber but seperate chambers would be much better due to possible cancellation. 4-6 subs in a sunfire is a little excessive for nothing in my mind.

I looked around in the trunk and there's no way I can fit 6, but I can fit 4. I should have stated that I'll be buying a better amp that can put out around 3000W, mine is 1500W @ 1ohm & 750 @ 2. I have an 05 RE XXX 12 in a double baffle & braced 1.2-1.5 cuft sealed box, and with the full 1500W, it had much less SPL than two SW8200's with 375W each, half their RMS. This tells me one thing, there's no replacement for displacement! But what you're telling me is that 1 12" woofer that can handle 2500W will out perform 4 12" on 2500W? In a ported box I'm assuming. If I were to use one sub to outperform 4, why wouldn't you suggest a ported 15" that can handle the same power because it would take up the same space? I'm also hoping that 4 woofers will have more 'kick'. I chose the SW's because my friend has 3 to get started (we're using his subs, my car, his deck, my amp, etc) and I read somewhere that you need good excursion to get the low's heard, and the SW's move more than my XXX (not that xmax really matters). With the same specs, how many 12's would it take to equal a 15" or 18"? I'm guessing that 4 12's = 1 18. I'd love to do a single sub setup, specifically a T3 TSNS SQL 15", but I don't have $1200+ to drop on it, or enough $ for 4000W. I'm not so concearned about the dB, 3 sharing 750W was enough, but I'd like to get more low end output. I played 20hz, 30hz, and 40hz with the 3, and 40hz was damn loud, but I'd like 20hz to be as loud as the 40hz. Yeah, I'm a basshead.

coming from lots of experience in installing many different types of subs and boxes in j-bodies, I would say if you like bass lose your back seat and either wall it off or build a box that goes from the trunk to the back seat and stay below the window line, you can reach your goal with one very decent 12 or two, one 15 or two, it all depends on how crazy you can get, my set up is two 15" L7's in a 9.5 cubic foot box but I need to re-tune because it is hitting too low right now here are some pics so you can get an idea

I still have a ton of sealing around the wall to do but in time it will happen;)

I'm not looking to get that crazy, but I wouldn't mind folding down the rear seat and having a box go over it from the trunk, I'd use two ported 15's for that. What 15's though? :dunno:
