waterproofing
 

im looking to beef up my boat with a 1200 watt sub, its not a marine product, so it wont be waterproof. I want to build a simple wooden box cover it with carpet or whatever, then use a sheet of plexy glass to cover the front, any ideas or feedback anyone?

I used white marine gelcoat to seal the baltic birch plywood on the outside of the box for total marine waterproofing and on the edge of the speaker cutout. I then took some heavy duty rubberized carper underlay and tacked that on the inside surfaces of the box with adhesive spray. The design of the box had the woofer aimed down at the floor with one edge cut open at the floor to direct the bass into the area I wanted it in. The baffle was located about three or 4 inches above the floor.

Worked perfect...the box was impermeable to water and the woofer was out of view and well protected, plus the sound was directed to where I wanted it. Even if the floor had three inches of water it would have been no prob with this design.

**Note: (three of the box sides run down to the floor, and fourth side is open between the floor and baffle to let sound out).

I just fibreglass resin the wood...its seals the wood pretty good...

The marine Gel coat is the same thing as resin but with a color that matches most boats... you can get it in ivory or white (plus red, blue or green, or dye to match) but the point being most often boats are white or ivory so it's already mixed'n ready to go, just add hardener. :)

That's all fine for the box but I think his concern was for the amp. Either stick with a sealed box (boo) and put the amp inside it or just mount the amp up high under the dash.

I figure if you swamp your boat that bad you have bigger concerns than a $300 watt amp... :ohwell:

^^^Depends on the boat I guess...^^^ If it's a cuddy cab a good place to mount amps and distro blocks is inside the cuddy on the bulkhead wall, opposite the steering side usually has more room.

I made a nice amp-board for buddy, mounted both amps to it and then secured it to the bulkhead with large stainless bolts and wingnuts for easy service-ability.
