What is almost as good as a DEX-P99RS?
 

Been looking for a head unit for an audio system I want to put together. I already have most of the pieces I 'd like to use on hand. It would be going in a 2007 Subaru Forester.

WHat I have on hand:

a big roll of Brown Bread
Zed audio Draconia 4 ch amp (With Burr Brown upgrade)
1 set of 6.5" Dynaudio components with crossovers
1 set of Focal 5.25 components with crossovers
1 10 inch IDQ sub (that would be built into the back corner of the vehicle)

I have been looking for a very nice head unit and it seems the fancy pants Pioneer DEX-P99RS has caught my eye. I would have a local shop do the install and tuning.
DO you have any suggestions for another head unit that is less daunting to the novice and easier to live with that has close to the SQ capabilities of the DEX-P99RS? Could be an older model, as I like buying used stuff. Ultimately I would probably be happier with a Double Din for ease of use, but was told by an audio installer with a long track record that the double DIN don't really have the SQ potential of a good single DIN for some reason. Any truth to that? Please let me know what high end head units you like. I was thinking of maybe just going with the 1 amp powering the sub and front stage as well as I rarely have anyone in the back but the dog.
