what freq to set a subsonic filter?
 

hi all.. i am putting together a small system. basically i'm feeding 300 rms (underrated watts) to two Kaption 10's (old school ones)..

anyway i am looking into a Harrison PFMOD subsonic filter selectable to 20, 25, 30, or 35hz @ 12dB/octave: http://store.hlabs.com/pk4/store.pl?view_product=12

my 2.072 ft^3 enclosure is tuned to 35Hz. what is the general rule for where to cut off the frequency band? right at the tuning freq? or could it be set a bit lower? these subs are rated for 175rms each, this amp will match that plus a bit extra, so they will be at their power limits. i plan to set my gains conservatively and would like to have my filter set so that they will be safe from playing frequencies low enough to damage them.

does this subsonic filter look like a decent one? i've been researching others but i am trying to keep power draw to a minimum so i hope a passive one like this will do the trick.

Try it a 30 and 35hz just not at full power, usually in a car the tuning will be slightly lower then the box would be out of the car. so you should be fine at 30.

I like the idea a lot, always wanted to try them HL PFMODs but never needed them. Probably the cheapest way to go without adding extra processors. but do you really need one?

i assume that i do. my old Pioneer GM-H200 has no onboard subsonic filter... so basically it would be sending signals as low as 20Hz to my subs, not that i listen to much music that has tones that low but just to be safe...

the other thought that was crossing my mind is the SoundStream BX-10.. i could own the BX-10 for a bit more than the PFMOD (shipping prices bring the PFMOD up to about $65 cdn - $39 for the unit and $24ish to ship:o ) but i find it hard to find info on what gauge wire to run to the SoundStream BX-10 and how much current it uses. i only have a stock 95amp alt and stock battery in my Explorer which is why i was thinking i should go with a passive filter rather than a processor with a subsonic filter that will draw extra power to operate. my amp has 60amps worth of fuses and it's not a Class D so i'd say it will draw quite a bit from my stock system as it is. depending on what gauge wire to use for the BX-10 and how much current it will draw, for the extra $10 or so it might end up being more useful than the PFMOD. only drawback would be the cost of extra wiring but if it doesnt use much current i could shell out the extra $$ for the BX-10. but all in all i dont THINK i need all the bells and whistles that the BX offers. all i really need is a subsonic filter, i dont know maybe if i had a BX i'd end up liking it lol.

The BX-10 is a lot like the Audiocontrol Epicenter. I used to haver one and it made my bass sound like !! it just created this low rumble that killed the sound quality of the system, it was not natural, I got rid of it really fast. I seriously doubt that you need a subsonic filter, keep your money dude!!

By the way, most signal processors will not draw more than a few amps at the most.
