what glue to use for subs?

so a buddy asked me what kind of glue/silicone to use to makea repair on a sub... its a plastic cone(i think) wiht a foam surround and its starting to seperate from the cone in a spot about 3-4 inches long

so suggestions?

household goop

i was told shoe goop aswell but i think that was more for if your surround was damaged cause the shoe goop is still flexible when dry

First does the surround broke or just separate where it supposed to be? If it broke it means that he need to replace the entire surround. The problem with glue and foam (lot's of different type) is that if you use the wrong glue it will eat the foam, ive read that a few people had success with epoxy... If you can find out what is the brand/model of the sub, we could probably find what type to use. Also ask him to pinch the foam to see if it cracks, if it does that means new surround.

Google's not my friend tonight... Can't find the info, but lot's of ppl use the "Arlene's Tacky Glue" on foam surround.

i use recone black glue but you can normaly get away with silicone

are you just gluing the surround back to the plastic cone? just use CA glue.

Permabond or LocTite brand have black CA glues. 3M does as well.

I would use contact cement

Father Yuli 09-26-2008 11:32 AM

hobby shops have crappy ca glues but you can give that a shot.

_HeC_ 09-26-2008 12:27 PM

what other places sell CA glue or is it better to shop online?

Father Yuli 09-26-2008 12:29 PM

i really dont know, i by my stuff from this adhesive distributor in Toronto.

ShockingCanada 09-26-2008 12:48 PM

hobby shop CA glue is ok. Tons of peope used it back in the day. Just make sure you get the thick version so it doesn't run all over and also buy the accelerator for it so it doesn't take forever to harden. CA sticks really well to cones and surrounds so it should be just fine

_HeC_ 09-26-2008 01:20 PM

people are telling me to use superglue cause all superglues have Cyano-acetate in it??? if so it be alot easier to find asi oculd probabvly use what citrate suggested(household goop) i dont know of any hobby shops in london lol

ShockingCanada 09-26-2008 02:01 PM

superglue is cyanoacrylate. If you are in London there is a Hobby shop near the corner of Richmond and Oxford that sells CA glue. If you are driving from Masonville you would turn left on Oxford from Richmond and its on the right side of the road as I recall its almost right beside the Wendys there (I think its a Wendys...its definately a fast food restaurant right there that its by though)

_HeC_ 09-26-2008 02:04 PM

i knew there used to be one there but never pay attention when i drive by so i wasnt sure if it was still open and i dont know whats its called so i couldhnt look it up... its like a 2 minute drive from where i live so ill go take a look and see what they have:smilie_da

ohh and it is a wendys... i might have to pick up a baconator aswell now haha
