I agree Lethal, I'm more than happy to buy from a guy who helped me out and explained anything that I didn't know about the product I'm looking at. At the same time, however, I feel no pain in taking a quote somewhere else for them to beat it if the salesperson has been pushy, rude, or has tried to feed me a load of BS about the product I'm looking at or any other comparable product.

Other than those, my only real beef with sales people is when they try to "upsell" you, you go in, say "I've got $250 to spend on a single 12" sub, and they immediately show you the ones that are $300 to $350. and you have to argue them down to your own price range, which you already told them. obviously you're not looking to get a JL W7 for $250, or a kicker L7, you're looking for a middle of the road, nothing too fantastic sub. Times like that, I don't mind haggling the price of the $350 sub down to $250, because I came in, told him I wanted to spend $250, and he showed me the $350 sub, so I guess that he was offering me the $350 sub for $250, since he knew that that was my budget. If he loses commission on it, then maybe he should listen to the customer next time.

*NOTE: this is an example, meant for demonstration purposes only, don't flame me for it*

"I've got $250 to spend on a single 12"
At that point, I usually ask what you are going to use to power that sub, what kind of enclosure you have and how your going to use the sub ie...competition, lf bass, sq, daily use etc...

If I don't have a sub in your price range that will fit your needs then I would show you a more expensive sub but explain why I was doing that.

I would not immediately show you more expensive subs right away if you told me your budget right off the bat.

I am not a fan of the "upsell" unless it fits the clients needs.

I had a kid come into the store yesterday that had 2 JL W7 (12") in a sealed enclosure and wanted an amp to power it. He only wanted to spend $300 including tax. There was nothing I had that would give the necessary power the subs required. I apologized that there was nothing I had but asked his permission to show him what I thought would be the best options for him. He agreed and I did but he couldn't afford what he needed. Supposedly he is coming back today with his father to fill out a credit application to cover the difference he couldn't afford.

I guess in a way that was an upsell but wouldnt you agree that I did him a favour rather than taking his $300 and selling him an amplifier and since his subs did not come from me and I wasn't worried that when he blew them, he wouldn't be back at my store with them.

I have seen that scenario all too many times. A local shop sold a kid a new Rockford P2002 and told him it had enough power to run his 4 Rockford RFP 15" subs in sealed enclosures. When I inquired at the shop he bought them from they told me he only wanted to spend $300 so they sold him what he could afford. Was this wrong?

IMO. Yes

We also have the lowest price. If you find a lower, addertised, in stock price we will beat it.
Claudio, Is it possible for futureshop to order a model that isn't carried in-store? Such as the DEH-P960MP (I haven't seen it in any of the stores at least.) </font>
Hey Toolman, no we will not be carring the DEH-9600MP this year. It was not a big seller with last year's model. With the demand for In Car Video went with the AVIC-N1 (this is a very cool deck)

Wow. TV, radio and a few flyers a week and you guys still have to advertise for free on here? </font>
What are you talking about?

The question was, Where can I buy a Pioneer???

I answered him and the questions that followed, plain and simply.

Lethal: I agree, that situation is totally different, but I'm talking about salespersons who automatically try to up the ante on your price range. really annoys me (had the same thing in every jewellery store we went to looking for wedding rings, except one, guess which one we bought from?)

In a situation where the person is looking for a certain amount of power, or power for certain subs, then it is totally reasonable to explain that the power they need is out of their price range, and then show them other things.

That is the problem with some sale staff.

The hear but don't listen.

If the Sales staff were to LISTEN to what the customer is looking for their task would be a whole lot easier, alot less returns and more customer repeat biz.

There is no need to "up sell" anyone if that person knows what he wants.

To add to Lethal, everyone has the "lowest" price...I have said it before and will say it again

Price will get the customer into the doors, service will bring them back to you.
