What happens if...

What happens if, for example, your head unit has 8 volt pre outs (such as the eclipse model which I am considering at the moment) but your amp can only take up to 6.5 volts (such as my infinity amp). Would this rule out the possibility of the amp to clip? When I switched from a 3 volt HU to a 5 volt HU there was a massive difference. It sounds like it would be a great idea for reasons that confuse me but what do you guys think about it? Lol, I reread the paragraph and it confused me but I don't know of any other way to ask my question, so good luck , and thank you .

umm, the amp can still clip.

I noticed VERY little going from my 2.7 volt to my 8 volt.

remember, your deck may say that it puts out 8 V, but when? My alpine says its got 3 4 volt outputs, but my sub output starts to clip at 2.7volts and thats way before my front/rears start to make full power.

It's all a question of balance......whatever the inputs on the amp require to make full output power is all you really need from the deck.

Back to the issue of setting gain controls properly....

go to this site and scroll down on the right side to #90 and read it. It's the best explanation I've seen to date.
