I think it usually depends on what your looking for. Not all subs are designed with the same purpose. I'm looking for a 10" sub right now and I have very specific requirements. There are lots of great all round subs available though.

Power handling (more watts as you say) is certainly one consideration. But having more power handling in itself will not make a subs better or worse. If you have lots of power, you will need a sub that can take it.

The impedance (ohms) of a sub will also not tell you if a sub is good or not. Again you need a sub that works with the rest of your equipment and your sound goals.

Well that clears things up kinda, what are some of the different things subs can do, so the different criteria you might use to find a specific sub

Knowing how you will be using the sub, the music you will be playing and what you are expecting from it.... please tell me your friend is still not helping you.....

It might get a little too technical if I tell you how I pick a sub. It would be better if you tell me what you want out of the sub and then we can go from there. Cabinet will have a huge effect on the sound as well.

Yes two subs are ideal for people who want lots of bass response. There are lots of options available BUT you need to realize that the subs are just one part of the puzzle. If they are not put in the proper box, given the proper amount of power, wired properly and used properly, then you have just spent money for no reason other than buying the wrong equipment.

No matter which sub you "think" is best, the CABINET will either make it or break it.
A good quality sub is viewed in more than one way, construction is paramount, types of materials used for the cone and basket etc.., will play a part as well.
to find out what size, and type of sub-woofer is best suited to your needs, find out how much space you have to work with first(both for the cabinet and air volume in the car), then find the sub that will best fit the cabinet you intend on building.
