What sub to get if I listen to metal/punk?!?!
 

It seems that must of you listen to rap with big sub and everything and low bass but I have not yet heard anything really good with my kind of music ( death metal...punk).

I'm thinking about buying :

-Jl audio 12 or 10 inch w3v2
or
-kicker L7
or
-Alpine type R

Where I go they also sell Infinity, Memphis, JBL

my friend has two of the old type r's and he listens to quite a bit of screamo hardcore and a bunch of indie

I do too, im sitting on a single 12 phoenix gold RSD for now, itll be two this summer


main thing I found for punk is to get the kicks on the drums pretty kick ass u will get the best from midbass over subwoofer

you can get your midbasses to actully give u a "kick" in the chest kinda feeling

best way so far i've heard of getting it to be good is to box your speakers

Good point on the need for midbass. As far as sub selection I'd go with the w3 or type r. I think the L7 would give the best spl, the type r a good mix, and the w3 the best sq. Than again, sq is subjective. You can make the L7 sound amazing while the type r/w3 sound like a**.

Does the size make a difference ? 10 or 12 inch?

Size does matter big time, A 10" will move faster and easier then a 12" and then if you go bigger its not always better I found! Im going to say a nice set of 10" would be the best all around!, or 3 x 10", (30" of surface area as apposed to 2 x 12" = 24" more air = more fun), just my 2 cents, and I agree as well,, Midbass with punk/metal is a good thing, because alot of guitars hit notes that arent exactely 120htz (roughly where any good amp should be set to) they are more like 180htz....Just what I have learned over the years...

It really depends on the person, like my friend with the 2 type r's

he's going to get rid of one because theres too much bass for his tastes

(even though hes only putting 350 rms to both of the subs)

i'd on my side I perfer 2 12's for this kinda music so im adding a another sub soon

Actually 3 x 10's are very close in cone area to 2x 12's, Alpine typr r's for example have an sd(cone area) of 332cm^2 for the 10's and 480 cm^2 for the 12's. That's 996 cm^2 for the 10's vs. 960 cm^2 for the 12's, So 3 x10's won't really give you more output just from cone area. You may be able to add more power overall though, since you have 3 x 500 watt rms subs to play with vs. just 2 subs. The problem is most people don't have an amp that can maximize the set up. If you wire 3 subs parallel you end up with 1.33 ohms(assuming they're 4 ohm subs), where as 2x dual 4ohm subs can be wired for a 1 ohm load. This will usually give you the max power available from your 1 ohm stable amp. Anyway, 10's, 12's, 15's and any other size speakers can all sound great with just about any type of music as long as they are properly set up. I 've heard many 15's that sound extremely tight and clean, and many 8's that sounded bloated with little detail. I listen to a lot of techno, beats, and other rapid bass attack type music, and I changed from 10's to 12's. I find they are very accurate and allow for more sub bass that you can feel with other types of music which I listen to also. My suggestion is to listen to as many different set ups as you can to get an idea of what each sounds like.

hmmm ok so now I think I'll go with one 10" type-R or one 10w3v2. I'll pu another one later if it doesn't sound *loud* enough.

I was wondering if I cant get the midbass your talking about with a good set of front component? If I use my crossover, I wont get that midbass..am I right??

I'm really happy with my 2005 type R's. I listen to a lot of old school punk and metal and some of the recordings lack lowend. What i find to work awsome with this music is my Audiocontrol Epicenter.
