With the various different classes available to competitors now, you don't have to have that $10,000 install to win. You don't even need the big dollar equipment. As long as the install is done well, you can compete with relativly average equipment and be successfull. You have to start somewhere right?
It all depends on how serious you want to get with it, but to get out and compete can be done on a budget. Believe me, I did it. </font>[/QUOTE]Hell...If I can do it using an 8Track tape...anyone can do it...
Although it was originally meant as joke,it seems to drive home the point that you dont need a big dollar, top of line sound system to go out, compete, have fun, meet people...
I have my mind set that next fall I WILL go to finals...if even as a spectator...I have heard soo many great stories from the finals,I have to go...it sounds like soo much fun..
As far as getting people out..I'm still going at it..I find someone who has small setup in their car,I will as em about it..then we start talking about db drag...you would be amazed the number of people that have always wondered if they did such a thing..
Lets get out and the word, people!!

I can honestly say that the reason I stopped competing was money. I did not change equipment often, but if I did'nt get first I would tear out my system and replan and that cost bucks (ie. fiberglass, MDF, scerws, carpet, etc etc.)

I gotta side with Jon and the rest that it does not have to be expensive.
For $1000 one can be extremely competitive in SPL. I know if I was so inclined I would be at the top of one of the lower classes.
For $2000 one can be extremely competitive in SQ comps. As Peter mentioned, I know I could get a finals invite for a $2000 investment.
The only thing that discourages people from competing is themselves. I used to compete for the social aspect and placement was just a bonus.

I agree also with the fact that it doesn't have to cost alot to be competitive. While you can get some decent equipment for $2000, talk with the ppl who are selling it to you. Get some ideas on how to set it up properly. But you can't go into your first comp thinking about winning. Learnng from the ppl who are winning is the most valuable experience I can think of. Talk to them, show them your system, get suggestions. If you can get yourself some time with a judge, listen to him/her. Trial and error is everything. You can't expect to be the best right off the bat.
Next year will definatly be a test for the sport. If we all stick together on the issue of getting more attention drawn to this sport, it will grow. I'm going to be traveling around next year to all the shops and show them what is possible to achieve through more advertising. Maybe it would be a good idea for a couple ppl to bring their cars and come with me. So instead of just me talking to them, it can be a small group of us. Maybe a scrap book can be put together with pictures taken from different events by everyone. So for example, instead of just my pics, it'll have pics from that crazy guy Martin, Team Rip Rock, Team FX...etc. If we can show non-participating shops what is happening without them, maybe they'll get an interest.

Advertising doesn't have to be expensive. Word of mouth is the best one by far.
Most of the people who attend are the people who are already in the scene, or know about the sport and know how to look for the events.
It is sites like these, that help the sport out. Its a general car audio forum, with tons and tons of information on it. People need to be informed, before they will do anything else. If you knew nothing about Hockey.. if no one told you anything about Hockey, then why would you spend money, or why would you take the time to go see a Game?
You have to start convincing dealerships, installers, and competetors, need to start working together. If someone comes up to you and asks you why you know so much, or how you got it that loud, or what you did, or anything, whenever you get the chance, mention the website (this one for example).
Its easy to get information across to people when you have their attention. In order to get their attention, you need to make it look good.
Highschool Marketing Classes, gotta love em.

1. Advertise people..... how will people know about DbDrags if they dont know when they are going on or where they are. 90% of people who have stereo's do not come to this web site or many other sites so they arent even aware of dbdrags.
2. Keep 1 or 2 classes for people who are beginners, if someone with 2 10" Alpine Type S's in a prefab box and 300watts come out and go against someone whos putting up 150db's how much fun do you think they are going to have?
3. Prizes and Trophys ALWAYS help bring people out, and if you can give everyone a little something its even better. And dont take the crappy prize route like $75 Gift certificate for your shop and then in the fine print it reads "On purchases over $200" that kinda crap is LAME
4. Try to hold a dbdrag in conjunction with a car show so people can see what they are all about..
But advertise, advertise, advertise people dont know if they arent told.
