What's Wrong With This Sub (Video) - JL 10w7

I've put a description in the YouTube video but I'll put some info here as well ...

10w7 I haven't played in about a year ... what I THOUGHT would sound excellent is sounding crappy.
The sub is hitting and hitting hard but the thing is, when you listen to the sub play, its very punchy, loud and just not right, at all ...

Any idea what may be causing this and if anything, how to fix it?

You have to listen carefully but the loudness you're hearing isn't the crappy mic, it's actually the sub.
I'll try to take some more video with a different camera, hopefully it will pick it up.

Thanks greatly. Confused and upset.

Edit: New Video!

Sounds perfect on those sweeps, sounds like your car has a rattle or two, but nothing odd coming form the sub

Send it back. downgrade to a w6. It's a much better sub.

DaVibe 10-20-2009 09:58 PM

There's no "Send It Back" option on this one ... I own it! lol (as in that's not possible).

I'll have to shoot another video ... it's definitely not normal IMO (and another colleage, shall I say).

I'll get on that tomorrow.

To help DaVibe in explaining the situation (I was with him today) I'll explain my thoughts on the issue.

At low volumes, the woofer is neat and tidy. Once the volume is up, the sub sounds as if the coil is scratching up against something. The woofer sounds 'blown' but is capable of playing anything you throw at it for a long period of time without any smell of burnt coil or anything irregular.

We never got to taking the woofer outta the enclosure as it seems to be a pain in the ass to do...

Could it be that the magnet structure/pole has shifted? Is something like this fixable?

If theres coil rub no theres nothing you can do to fix it other than a recone (hope you got a warranty as I think a recone for a W7 is almost a grand)

Sounds fine in the vid to me though

well without being there and hearing it, im going to suggest an air leak at higher volumes and certain frequencies.

did you install the gasket?

yes there also sounds like a rattle or 2.....also check your crossover and make sure its on low pass below 80hz.....

the lowpass filter will only damp the frequencies above the cutoff point..the sub can play those high notes without harm.

check the box, its a prefab enclosure and has probaly broken at a glue joint causing it to flop at high vol. or perhaps a spider is torn and making noise, you will not know til you take it outa the box.
