I have read a few times here that a 3 way system is complicated and to hard to set up to be worth the effort and wondered what it was that made it so hard? Is it not just as simple as setting the X-overs for a 2 way? or does it have to do with the amount of power to the different speakers?
Just trying to understand so any info should help.

Actually they aren't much harder to set up. One disadvantage would be that you have another driver you need to find room for. If you can keep the midrange and tweeter very close together and you are just running them passive, it shouldn't be any harder to set up.
Having that 4" midrange also takes some stress off of the 6.5 driver.
I've had good results in the past with 3-way setups.

That sounds promising since what I was thinking of doing (just because I have most the stuff) was running the 6.5/tweeter in the door and putting the 5.25 in the kick pannel that would be approx 6-8" away. The only thing I need will be a different xover but I was going to replace the one I have now anyway. Would 4 inchers be better suited than 5.25s.

Every new speaker you introduce now has to be level and phase matched to the other drivers. Also, you now have another origin of sound that is on it's own plane and separate from the rest which introduces acoustic phase issues such as cancellation and new reflections.

That being said - I prefer the sound of a 3way front end and always try to run one myself. Set up and tuning will be easier if you go all active.

Great I think I will give it a shot. I was planning on going active with it I just have to decide on a new Xover. The PPI FRX-456 seems to be the unit that will work the simplest? Hopefully one of the members here will have one to sell. Thanks

The PPI is a nice unit, but it only has a 12dB/oct slope. You may want to find something that has a steeper slope like an 18dB/oct or 24dB/oct.

I was looking at AC web site and the only one I could see was the 6XS but I wasnt able to figure if it was any different from the specs? As for PG I will check out their site.

I was thinking of going with the PXA-H700 but when I was up at Andreas show in Penticton this summer a guy in the store I was talking to said that the Alpine unit still wouldnt acomplish what I was tring to do? I was looking at the DVA-9860/PXA-H701 combo. In the Alpine sales catalog I have it dosent really say what it can or cant do and their web site was no help either.

As it stands now I have two Xovers (PG 215EQX / SS SVX4)that I can do the job with but theres lots of splitting going on and I just wanted to simplify it to one unit
