Wiring 2 DVC subs to mono amp- Is it possible??
 

Guys,
I have a Phoenix Gold Tantrum Amp (1200.1) which is 1200 rms at 2 ohm. Although it is a mono amp, it has 4 speaker outs (2 pos, 2 neg- like a 2 channel amp).

I would like to hook up 2 Kicker Solobaric Dual Voice Coil L7's (either 2 or 4 ohm version, not sure yet) to this amp. I figure that I can simply run the speaker outs from the amp to each sub, giving 600 rms to each sub (the subs are rated at 750 rms, so this will prevent me from overpowering them). Then, I will wire the voice coils for each sub in parallel, giving each coil 300 rms.

My question is, does my logic above sound reasonable?

Also, since my amp is 1200 rms at 2 ohms, should I go with 2- 2 ohm L7's (voice coils wired in parallel), thereby making it 1 ohm per sub? But since there are 2 subs I will have 2 ohms going back to the amp (and my amp is rated at 2 ohms?

Or should I go 2- 4 ohm L7's (coils in parallel) bringing it to 2ohm per sub? With 2 subs I will have 4 ohms back at the amp, more than it is rated for?

Everyone is recommending I go with 1-4 ohm L7 wired in parallel (which will bring it to 2 ohms) which works with my amp. Or I can go with 2- 4 ohm single voice coil subs.

In the end you want a 2 ohm load at the amp. So if you have a sub with DVC and each coil is 4 ohms wire them in parallel and you will get a 2 ohm load. Since you are using 2 subs to get the 2 ohm load you can either go 2 SVC 4 ohm subs or 2 DVC but the coils would have to be 2 ohm each. Then you could wire each coil in series giving you 4 ohms per subs and wire them both in parallel to the amp.

Or wire each 2 ohm coil in parallel and then wire the subs in series. Either or.

The seperate + & - terminals are internally wired in parallel and it's stable at 2ohms as you said.

If you are going to connect each sub to it own set of + & - terminals then you need each sub to be a 4oms load. Weather they are 4ohm SVC or 2ohm DVC with each VC wired in series you will be presenting your amp with a 2 ohm load.

i'll answer it again - you need DUAL 2 OHM versions.

You can find it on the Phoenix Gold website under support -----Literature and on the left of that page there's a link to Phoenix Gold FTP Server. From there you can go to mobile audio, Manuals, Amplifier then to your amp.

Thanks Natban and Father Yuli- very helpful info, much appreciated. So as long as I bring 2 ohms back to the amp, 1 ohm to each set of terminals, I should be fine. And to get 1 ohm out of a DVC sub, I will need a 2 ohm DVC wired in parallel to get my 1 ohm. Just to clear things up.

Father Yuli- I realize you mentioned that I could do so but I want to be sure before I go buy a pair of subs. Thanks for all of the help.

No....if you put 1 ohm to each terminal you will have .5 ohms. You need 4 ohms brought to each set of terminals.This will give you your 2 ohm load.
