Wiring help - what else do I need?
 

Ok, so I have an amp that is going to power my fronts and my sub in the boot. These are the wires I have just now.

What are these wires and what other wires do I need.

in order of appearance:
speaker wires
rca y splitter
rca patch cord
rca y splitter
ground wire
power wire with inline fuse/fuseholder

you will also need more speaker wire if the fronts are also being powered, a remote trigger wire to turn on the amp from the deck's remote turn on lead, and depending on the amp, and set up...you may need one or two more sets of rca patch cords for separate front, rear, and sub signal transport.
which make/model amp? which speakers/subs?

The amp is a JBL GTO 75.4, going to be running a pair of 5x7 Infinity Kappa's at the front(2ohms) and an Infinity Kappa Perfect 10 sub(4ohms)

Looks like I will need longer speaker wire for the fronts and speaker wire for the sub aswell. Should the speaker wire from the sub be thicker than for the fronts? And what do I do with the RCA's? Do I need a seperate one for each speaker and an extra one for the sub? I think I have everything else sorted but its where the RCA's go and why they go there that is troubling me. I also know that using an RCA Y splitter isnt recommended when you can just use another RCA cable.

Where on the amp (and HU) do I connect the RCA cables to and how many do I need for 2 speakers and a sub?

ok...1 set of rca's from the deck's front output (left and right) will go to the amp's front input. 1 set from the deck's rear or sub output to the rear input of the amp. That amp can run in 3 channel mode, so front left and right, and bridge the rear left and right to form a single mono channel of 3-4x the power to the subwoofer. Don't bother with the y- splitters. As far as speaker wire is concerned, use at least 16 awg (guage) for the fronts and 12-16 for the sub depending on the length...preferably 14awg or larger (lower awg).

Hey HarryZ, what head unit are you using? If you only have one set of RCA outputs from your head unit then you will need those Y splitters. I actually need a set of those right now. I also have some extra RCA cables 17' long. If you don't need the splitters and need a long RCA cable we could work out a swap. I also have a bunch of assorted wires, connectors, distro blocks, etc. I am not looking to sell anything, but if you need anything I will see what I got and we will work out something. Let me know what head unit you have and we can go from there.

I think that amp only requires one set of pre amp inputs (front) as it automatically feeds the same signal to the rear channels if no rear input is detected (you'll have to check that as I haven't used that amp specifically, but that is a common feature on many 4 channel amps these days). This would mean that if your head unit only has 1 preout, then you don't need to use the y-splitters, just one set of RCA wires from deck to amp should do the trick.

If the amp does what you say Veeman about feeding the same signal to sub/rear, I'll connect my single RCA to the front input on the amp to the fronts output on the HU and see what happens. My headunit, unfortunataley is an ebay job. Its quite atrocious but Im am saving up for a JVC KD-AVX44. Regarding RCA info, it says the following:

- RCA Audio R&L Input; Radio Antenna Input;
- RCA Audio FR/FL/RR/RL/Sub woofer output One Video Output

Not really sure if that means I have 1, 2 or even 3 outputs lol

you have 2 for the front, 2 for the rear, and a mono sub out...subs are usually run with a mixed mono output as bass frequencies need not be in stereo...just look at your home theatre. If you want to control the sub level from your deck, then run the front pair to the amp's front l and r input, and the sub out to the amp's rear input( I would use a stereo rca cable and a y splitter from the deck to the rca's. This will allow you to plug in to both of the amp's rear inputs, and if in the future you need or want to add rear speakers and another amplifier, then your signal cable is already there...actually you may want to just run 3 sets of rca cables now for future upgrades....up to you.)
