Would buying a larger cap then i need be bad?

My system is a single sub with 375w RMS, im very pleased with the sound im getting from it, but i want to add a "stiffening" capacitor to my system right beside my battery, (its under my back seat)

my car has no dimming headlight problems, but my radio lights dim and my battery gauge goes down a few ticks, but still stays at or above 14v.

just wondering because the chart says i would need a .5 farad cap, but 1 farad are more readily available and cheaper, any thoughts?

zoomer 10-08-2011 04:58 PM

dont waste your money. caps do nothing. at least tiny ones like 1 farad .
You dont have a problem! seems your system is working well!

L1ability 10-08-2011 05:29 PM

are there any SQ beneifits to adding a cap? because thats more what i was after :D

zoomer 10-08-2011 05:32 PM

you have obviously not searched any threads about caps.. NO NO NO dont waste your money. NO one selling caps have ever shown the benefits of simple couple farad caps. Maybe 100 Farads can act like a small battery.. But a few farads are totaly uselss.
I am an electrical engineer and have done the math.

jstoner22 10-08-2011 09:11 PM

there can definitely be sound SQ benefits.

just don't get dragged into thinking a cap will solve a lack of power issue.

caps are great at reducing noise in a system.

check out that video. simple demonstration of an overlooked benefit of a cap.

Wow "Monster Cable" marketing... This is a very high profit margin product, no surprise that a company like IXOS want you to have one (or more) If you have a crappy amp that generate noise on the 12V line to a point it's a problem, change the amp... Also even if there's noise on the 12V, the internal power supply of the amp will simply get rid.

L1ability 10-09-2011 05:40 PM

i dont have power issues, the car stays above 14v, but sometimes it bobbles a few ticks up and down (always staying above 14v though) and i was just thinking a cap would "steady" that out,

the sub is a jbl gto and the amp is a jbl 3501, very happy with both

To the contrary of what this guy is saying, the smaller 1F cans are the only caps that can help. The inductance of the larger 5-250F+ carbon caps makes them useless.

If you look through the archives over at carsound.com you might be able to dig up performance graphs from some real world testing which clearly shows the benifits and limitations of using a cap. In most cases you would probably be better off spending your money on a high performance low resistance battery.

Please show them to me.. "might be able to dig up" ? fat chance !

OP, as you can see, you are NOT going to get a straight answer.

There are simply too many opinions on the benefits and uses of capacitors (or lack of)

Call up David Navone at autosound 2000 and ask him about caps genious... I'm pretty sure he has a book you can buy that might clear things up for you... otherwise try a search of the carsound forum as I suggested...

Yes there are many opinions on caps. Just as there are for Homeopathic medicines, ear candling, and communicating with the dead. But none has ever been proven to work. Opinions must be backed with facts.
We are so used to hearing sales pitches for useless weight loss products, magnetic energy bracelets, etc. that just don't work. We are bombarded daily with baseless claims for product that are just a slick sales pitch to steal your money. We seem to forget that when someone makes a claim, it is up to them to prove it. It is not for others to disprove the claims. We just want to believe it because it may make us feel good.

The marketeers of capacitors have not proven how they work to improve a car audio system's performance! It's not up to others to prove that they don't work!

For example:
Show me an oscilloscope trace of DC power to the amp with and without a cap.
Show me a voltage measurment.
Show me a harmonic distortion measurement that shows it has improved.
Show me a noise measurement with and without a cap!

As I posted there is a wealth of information in the RC archives over at carsound including real world test results and some of the graphs you are asking about. If you wish to become enlightened go look for yourself. I've already seen them, and have more important things to do then go digging through old internet posts for someone else who has nothing better to do then argue fallacies.

ignition22 10-13-2011 09:32 PM

I think the fact their is so much disagreement about whether they do anything is proof enough that you don't need one.

I have heard of people using them for there headunit to keep power consistent there but again everyone would do it if it made a noticeable difference

AFAIK with the car having an alternator that creates ac power and diodes to cut the tops of those sign wave and make a pulsed rippled dc cap will indeed help "smooth" your dc power. A slight amount of ac makes its way coupled on the dc line which if the power/signal side of your amp is not isolated or the amount is too high can come through as signal noise to your ac fed speakers. The caps will only allow the dc through as well as flatten out those peak ac waves that were cut to create the dc source in the first place.

Plainly, yes from my experience there is no gain in the idea that the cap will be working to supply current in the capacity a battery will but for sq reasons the more capacitance in a power system the better.

Caps are gay

will5757 10-19-2011 04:19 PM

seeing as a cap only store a small amount of power, then needs to be refreshed it'd be useful for music with no bassline, and a loud kick periodically that exceeds your systems power capability

i can't really think of a lot of music like this, any kind of loud bassline would quickly drain a cap and leave you where you started.

Dukk 10-19-2011 06:23 PM

Most modern amps utilize a PWM power supply that a cap should cycle faster than unless playing something approaching a test tone at high output levels.

danyman 10-19-2011 09:32 PM

to the OP the reason y ur deck lights dim is because ur prob clipping the crap out of it.. time for a 4ch amp before u fry the deck or u speakers

johntied 11-16-2011 05:28 AM

You have to install more volt power battery in your car. It's happen due to low volt battery...

johntied 11-16-2011 11:11 PM

Yes i mean "amps" because the same thing happen to my car...

Your battery is weak that is why your car is doing that put better battery in it then see...:stroke:
