would a JL 10W3V3-4 be and upgrade to 10" Alpine R

will be pushed by an MRD-M605 at 4ohm, in 1.1cube ported box tuned to 40hz. both are 300wrms subs. Type R I have is the older version. Nothing wrong with it just want to experiment. I am looking for a more powerful kick in the ass feeling along with great SQ at a reasonable price.

I'd love to get 10w7 but it's just way too expensive. I was also considering the newer type R with dual 4ohm coils so I can run it at 2ohms and feed all the 644wrms (birthsheet figure) the amp produces into it.

so what do experts say I should be looking at SQ wise but with a very good kick?

Personally, I'd go with a 10-W6...

well that one is still on the expensive side, not far from w7

zinger002 01-24-2007 06:57 PM

are those good SQ subs?

the l7 15 sounded pretty good, mind you i couldnt tell because the whole vision's store was rattling...
and the l7 15 was like 500 bucks so...

Everyone says Kicker subs are bad for SQ, and I'd have to disagree... Once these get broken in, and get a lot of power, they sound great.

If you can go to the local store and ask the guys if they want to drop it in your trunk for testing. Then you will know.

I definately agree! leave sq to the highs thats were it belongs anyways, i had a s12L7 and it pounded like crazy and it sounded far from shitty!

And imo going from a type r 10 to a jl 10 would be alot of money wasted, you want more kick,go for a 12" jl,kicker, alpine,RF,etc take youre pic dual 4 ohm of course, that extra wattage will do nicely lol, a single kicker S12L7 ported will slam with 600+wrms

thinking:
Diamond Audio D610D4
Image Dynamics IDQ (10")
AVI SLS-250

what are the prices for ID and AVI and where to find?

I notice IDQ and SLS-250 have 250wrms nominal power handling. Would I kill them with 400wmrs continuos?

You've stated you want SQ but with more "kick in the pants" output. Swapping to any of those tens (or basically any 10" in that power class) is not going to give you what you want. Your Type R is pretty good at what you seek: good SQ and good putput. The W3 is pretty similar in terms of output although IMO the SQ is not as good. SQ will be better with the three drivers you've just mentioned but the output will not be there (compared to the 'R).
If you're going to keep the same amp I would suggest you up the driver displacement. Go for a single 12" or even a 15" if you have the room.

no room man. gotta use the same 1.1cube box. I like to be able to put things in my trunk. if that's the case, maybe I'll just fatmat the out of the trunk and doors and get a new deep cycle battery when the spring time comes.
