hi. i've heard a lot about Xmax, but what is a really powerful, normal and poorly sub rated at in this category?? thx

there are a ton of very good sounding woofer available that have low linear xmax, granted these arent the best woofers for spl, but have very good sq, it all depends on the goal you are trying to achieve

Efficiency is a useless spec for determining output in a box in a vehicle. It is very possible that the low efficiency JL would womp yours in SPL with 50 watts of power.

As for anyone actually answering his question Xmax is just a measurement of how far a sub will move. I would say 12-13 mm is about average nowadays, 7-9 mm is what most budget subs do. High end subs can be up to 30 mm nowadays.

and very exspensive woofers can have only 6mm of linear excursion as well

True dat, Xmax is just a spec that CAN give an indication of performance, but does nothing to tell you how something sounds. Some of the worst spec drivers sound incredible. Just check out a CA&E mag and they rag all over drivers for bad specs (like suspensions glued up off center) then Eric Holdaway raves about it's sound.

well the reason i asked is because the subs i have seem to be in the low class as far as Xmax is concerned. on my subs they are only a 7mm. i dont consider it to be a budget sub even for a pioneer. especially being a premier series and the rms rating is like 400. plus the are fairly pricey. i hope it can perform to the expectations as what i paid for it. actually im hoping xmax has little to do with its performance since of its low rating. any thought?
