Your head unit......

I have a JVC SH-909.
JVC's top of the line from last year-ish. I like it because of a few aspects:
1- it was CHEAP
2- it is covered by the good old FS extended warranty
3-MP3 playback, it will play ANY digital music format I have thrown at it in the past 2 years.
4-I like the old-school home receiver-style looks, with the big volume ****, brushed aluminum, etc
5- Motorized face. I have broke two expensive decks previously due to my clumsiness and their manually-removed flap-faces. I especially wanted a deck with a motorized face, so that I didnt have to touch anything.
Aspects of the deck which I dislike
1-It's display is a crappy dot-matrix...no funky graphics.
2-It isnt the greatest SQ-wise....though it beats the S**t out of the AC-Delco I had before
Overall I love the deck, even though it will always be Junk Very Cheap. The deck cost me just over 400 dollars on closeout, including extended warranty, from FS's website. I would have gone with a mid-to-high end Alpine, but at the time I couldnt get a decent price on one, so there I was. I had looked at all the decks in that price range, and in my opinion, the features didnt add up to this deck. I also wanted the extended service plan that the 'big box' stores offer, just because of my previous experience with awesome decks...that break and cost a ton to get fixed. Therefore, for my needs, this was the best deck I found, in my price range.

Just to let you know there are a few high profile competitors using those series of JVC decks as the source for their competition setups
Right now I am using a JVC KD S50. Pro's is it cost me next to nothing and actually plays CD's. Cons are it only ejects the CD about 1/16 of an inch then you have to pull it out yourself.

worked great for 3 years. now I'm currently installing a iva-c801< might be tempory depending on how I like it.
not decided on headunit yet, might stick with my Macrom single din DVD-9900.

Alpine CDA 7949.
Because it's non-flashy, has TOSlink output, and the price was right.
I don't know if it's the deck, but when I was running RCA outputs, the sub-out would clip at above 60% volume if the sub level was above 7/15. It caused some strange behaviour in the sub no matter what gain or crossover level settings there were.

I currently have a Nakamichi CD-400 head unit. Very understated costmetically, but it sounds fantastic. I've been very happy with the unit so far.
Reasons I bought it:
1)Great SQ deck, 24bit DACs, 8x oversampling, 4volt outs, three band tone control, power-ic bypass, High S/N ratio, very low THD.
2) Very simple looking, and amber backlighting that matches my dash.
3) The Nak CD700 MKII was too expensive

Pioneer DEH-P6300
This deck is 4 years old now but still sounds great. I bought it for it's internal crossovers, and EQ abilities. The display is dated in my mind but people are still amazed with the Organic EL display.
The low voltage outs suck and it's starting to get some quirks in it's old age.
Might pick up a DEH-P9400mp for my next HU or maybe a DVD LCD setup.

I have an Alpine 1310 Tuner/CD Controller...
Why?
1) It's old school.
2) I didn't want to have an indash CD deck. I hate to juggle with CDs while driving. With a couple changers in back, I have plenty of music to choose from.
3) Aside from controlling the changers it also controls my outboard D/A Converter.
3) It matches my interior nicely.
Cons
1) Low Pre-out Voltage.
2) Extra components to mount which means more space required.
Not mine but its a pic...
