120 db from an Alpine 12" Type S?
 

I have a Alpine SWS-1223D running at 4 ohms off of a Alpine MRP-M500 in a Bassworx sealed box.

Just did a quick test with a Scosche Boomstick and some dubstep (Cinema remix by Skrillex) and it told me i was hitting 120db.

Does this sound resonable? I realize a $25 sound meter probably isn't the best measuring device to use but i just want to know from the aficionado's on the board here if this sounds about right?

Let me add i have two layers of Ultimate b-quiet on the floor, front doors and on the back wall and a single layer on the roof and back doors of my Ranger.

tried that meter in my kia rio and it was about 10 to 12 dbs off
in other words when i tried it at a comp on a tl meter the boomstick said 127 db and the tl meter was 139 db
i had the meter in the center cup holder

different vehicle different results

Interesting, i was expecting the boomstick to have a reading that was above my actual SPL.

120 isnt much to hit in a car. I would almost expect higher with what you have.

The measurement wasn't taken at 100% volume, i haven't gone above 26 on the Alpine headunits volume dial i don't even know what the highest number is . . .yet :D

I am going to try another measurement this afternon with some Bass Nectar - Bass head.

I will post my results when i get them.

Out of curiousity what number (rough estimate) do you think i should be hitting? I honestly have no idea myself.

Np idead what you should be hitting; direction and placement of box, box design, wiring/electrical all play parts in SPL.
I'd suggest using test tones to get your numbers instead of music. If nothing else, you'll find your truck's sweet spot (resonant freq) at which it plays the loudest.

with a sealed box my guess would be around 130 db

running an audiopipe txx12rd in a 1/4 wave transmission box tuned to 48hz
powered by a sony 4 channel bridging the rear channels(about 120 watts)

keep in. mind u shouldnt be going over volume 26 or 27 on most alpine decks bc they get real dirty after that. theres no way to know until u take it to a show.

no point in making estimates or u end up like the quarter mile guys who bench race constantly...its lame.

I was wearing hearing protection when i tested it, didn't sound distorted through the earplugs but in the real world I rarely go over 18-20 on the dial.

Your right, the right/best way is to take it to a competition and have it measured with the proper instruments.
