which for better spl

Hey all

I am planning a system for my truck (my last one fell through due to dealer mess up) and I am wondering what I shold do with the subs. I am torn between running either 2 or 4 drivers but here is the kicker regardless of the number of drivers I will still be running a pair of 5 ch amps with 1000 watt mono blocks in them for the subs. So if I run 2 subs they will get 1000 watts each and if I run 4 they will get 500 each. I can get the subs in dual 2 or 4 ohm so the power will be the same. The subs I am looking at are 600 rms and 1000 peak I know 500 is a little low but it should still do the job.

I know more subs makes more spl but I was not sure if the power would come into play. I am not sure what will sound better and I don't know if running 4 will really give me anything more or not. And yes I know that I am talking about 2 different comp levels but I don't plan on setting any records or anything

Any thoughts on this one?

What truck?? how much room do you have to work with?? What brand are your amps??

darklcd 11-18-2010 08:58 PM

07 chevy avalanche. I am going take he midgate out and replace it with a sub box so I have lots of room. I am looking at a pair of hifonics ZXi60.4 + 1K amps to run everything.

I want to keep the box sealed though

Your title says "What would be better for SPL" and yet you wanna build a -3db sealed box?

Lessy 11-19-2010 06:22 AM

use 2 12's, with more driver you can encounter more problems
if you have the room, i would suggest a bandpass like box. Build the initial box in the cab and seal it off, then build the sub box and play around with positioning inside the cab box

Like Sinemeup said, if you're looking for SPL, a sealed encsloure is not the way to go.

go ported

darklcd 11-23-2010 02:56 PM

I am still torn on box design I know ported is louder my main question is the number of subs. what would be better 2 with 1000 rms each or 4 with 500 rms each. I am not sure if I should go for cone area of over all power.

thats my main issue.

Well if you have the room, do 4 subs in a ported box.

With the same power in a proper enclosure it's going to be louder than 2 subwoofers on the same power.

darklcd 11-24-2010 05:59 PM

I kinda thought that might be the case but I wasn't sure. So if I can swing it 4 subs will be louder then 2 even with double the power at least thats the plan in theory lol
