right now i have a MTX 7512-44 sub tuned to 40hz. what will be the out come of me tuning it lower, say 34-36 hz. will i lose/gain some SPL. if it matters i listen to classic rock and rap.

generally the high you tune it the more spl you will get out of it like a box tuned to 40hz will be louder than a box to 30 all things being the same.

Will have better SQ and hit the lower notes better. Loose SPL. A pretty medium tuning frequency is around 32. Best of both worlds right there. hehe....Winnipeg...good for you! Just ****tin' ya, I am from MB too.

If your going to compete, tuning low will kill your scores. But if you like to tear up your truck with the low notes, then tune low...I personally like to tune low and tear up my truck...but the downside of that is...of course everything starts..breaking...

Most often you will get a much cleaner/clearer sound from a box tuned low. You'll get a much much better frequency response from a deep box vs. a high box.(be able to enjoy a larger variety of music)

(also, I don't know if its true...but I believe (people tell me) you can hear deep deep bass a lot further away...(several miles in my case lol)

But, as they say, your best bet is to build a few different boxes with different tuning frequencies and see what you like best.

i guess i should posted this in the SQ forum. im not REALY in this for SPL. thats why im tuning low, other wise id be in the 55-60 hz range.

My turn.

If a box is say tuned to 60Hz... at what approx freq. would it peak at? A couple Hz above? I know there's many other factores involved but there has to be a general estimate.

actually good question... in your question I will "assume" that port area is much less than cone area, should peak 6-12hzover port frequency...that range becomes smaller asbox size increases....in general many different answers with many added questions to answer them properly...a good aproximation is WINISD..free download..just do a search

in some tests I have found that a box ported at say 60hz could actually peak lower at say 57-58hz...all depends on box and port size and how the port and sub are loaded which will create a whole new impedance curve in the vehicle rather than the one you would see on the computer
