After blowing apart my sub the other day, I wanted to test some different subs in the same box I built. First on the list was a Kapton SPL. And all I got to say is WOW
That sub did 1.5db louder than my Planet BB.
And it wasn't even worked in yet. Now it holds the highest spl for my car with 148.0db.
I would have never guessed it would make that much of a difference. Anyone else make big gains from equipment change?

Rockney 04-14-2005 04:36 PM

Funny you say that,, i went from JL W3's to the Kaption spl-1200's and it was night and day.. on the term lab im at 137.0 .. thats with a box tuned to 30hz...

What tunning frequency are you using to achieve 147/148 on the box..

Lessy 04-14-2005 06:44 PM

Tunning frequency of the box, I have no clue
I just built it by design and see what happens. The car, it's loudest at 42hz. I've never seen my doors flex soo much

I swaped (2) Mmats juggernaut 15" into a car that had Rockford Power HX2 and the car gained almost 3 db.

BooLeaN 04-15-2005 02:41 PM

I had 2 RE HC 15's in my car, swapped in 2 Selenium Extreme 15's and lost 2 db's.

I then changed the box, same power though, and gained 1 db by putting in the Selenium Extremes.

Everything is messed up lol, just do what you can, and have fun :D

djgtsr 07-18-2005 01:57 AM

Ive got 4 Kaption SPL1200s going in my car. Its gonna be massive. Kaption is awsome!

Prolifik 07-18-2005 06:30 AM

LOL yes Kaptions is the MASSIVEST

Lessy 07-18-2005 09:32 AM

especially these ones...

... to bad they can't hold 5000+wrms

btw..Lessy with that design to gain you SPL you would ahve had to make the port bigger :)did your tuning of the box not change with the added cone area in that box and sub displacement?

Lessy 07-19-2005 09:37 PM

ya, the tunning changed but not by much, only 1 frequency. I had it tunned higher with one 12, so I just lowered it before I put the subs in.

The problem now is that the sub that is directly over the port is xmaxing and the other one isn't. Thats what happened at the last show, only one sub blow apart and it was the one over the port.

Prolifik 07-19-2005 10:36 PM

b/c of your box design there is more back pressure behind the sub thats closer to the port. this same thing happened to dave dasilva and his audiobahn sub last year and same thing happened to jeff and his dd subs, all from that box deisgn. the sub thats closer to the port/located over the L of the port blows faster than the other one.

you're right, that is why Im workin on a slightly different variation of that box... you do have to admit...those boxes are working well and did gain SPL over the previous boxes used... it's not a free world... gotta give some to get some

Lessy 07-21-2005 10:12 AM

I got something in the works to solve that problem

Prolifik 07-21-2005 11:23 PM

oh yah the box works well i agree!!

peter u want to make me a box or design me one?

MTA 07-23-2005 03:17 PM

hehehe sure... it'll look definatly much cleaner than the one you keep butchering... hehehhe

TEAM LOL 07-23-2005 06:07 PM

Actually, Yuli's box looks a little better now-I saw it today, now all it needs is some gel-coat and it will be cool!!!

MTA 07-24-2005 06:24 AM

you mean he actually sanded the glue/sawdust ? or did he build a new box altogether?

JordyO 07-25-2005 06:52 AM

Guys... c'mon.. I thought we were smarter than this.

You can't just drop equipment in, see a gain, and say it's better.

If you change gear you really have to re-do all of your testing from scratch.

Different box/port sizes as well as different power levels and frequencies will work different with every type of equipment.

The only way to be able to say one sub is better than another is to work on some equipment for an extended amount of time until you really have maxed out the capabilities.

Am I wrong here...

Lessy 07-25-2005 07:01 AM

actually... yes

some equipment is just better than others in street application... this is why we do test over and over ;)

I'm wrong? ... ok...

I think you're reading it wrong. I never said some equipment isn't better. However just doing a drop in test is not the way to find out.

You can't drop an RE MT in to a box made for a DD 95 and expect it to work just as well. The MT needs a bigger box. (it's not a fair comparison)

Just like you would probably see a better score with an RE SX on a lower powered amp than you would from an MT. You can't just drop in the MT and expect it to be louder. The sub just isn't efficient enough for 1000w or lower.

Btw... at SVR.. didn't you say your PA subs were better than DD's?

Speaking of... you got PM :D

which box u guys talking about?? the one i gave to Keyur? that one had reach the maxed of its butcherness.

Lessy 07-25-2005 08:28 AM

it was my LA sub that was better in my application than the DD's

subs have limits on their design, you're not gonna use a $200 sub for spl, and if you do, dont expect much... this is what i'm trying to get at

I'm not gonna use a $200 sub for SPL? Is that a challenge? :D

Lessy 07-25-2005 08:37 AM

sure, if ya want... i got my 12"kaption spl in the car right now and doing only 0.4db lower than what I did at the last show

BTW, $200 is what i got it for

Hehe...cool. I'll see what I can come up with.

Is the $200 you paid for the Kaption new or used pricing?

Lessy 07-25-2005 08:47 AM

well I got it on discount

btw, that was with 1 AB200.1 at 1ohm built as a daily driver

JordyO 07-25-2005 08:53 AM

Hrm.. okie... lemme see what I can come up with
