To go for an SSNW box or not ? About 3000w of power

Hey guys.
I'm looking for some help with one of my spl projects and this forum seems very knowledgeable on this matter :)

The car I have is a local station wagon and I'm competing in a class where box limits are like in SSNW BUT I have a 3000w power limit and I'm also limited to a single 12" sub. All metering is done on the dash, car sealed.
The sub I'm using is an FI BTL N3 and so far I've tried all possible box positions box / port orientations.

This is how I got my highest score (149.2 at 52hz):
Attachment 18381

I also tried sub up / port back and the score was 149.1.

The car is deadened and then has a layer of 1/8" plywood on the roof, it's solid as a rock. Already tried smaller boxes, seems like the bigger I go, the louder it gets. This box is 2.8cf.

Would I benefit from building an SSNW style box ? I know those cars have awesome scores but there is much more power thrown in compared to a street class.

Sorry for the long-winded post, I wanted to get all the info I have. I'll have to look for impedance / power notes from testing.

i would go way smaller box than that.

go for a box that's like 1 cuft.

what amp? what type of electrical? do u have fuses?

Running an IA 40.1, 300A alt, 135Ah deep cycle in the back (+ one wimpy starter battery under the hood), 2 runs of 1/0 and no fuses.

The classes are limited by clamping the power. I have to keep it around 3000-3500w of clamped power, which so far works.

Smallest I've tried was 2cf.
Haven't tried 1cf after having little luck with such a small box in the Jeep (which now does 151 but that's another discussion).

when you went smaller, did you try a longer port?

AdrianD 05-09-2011 09:31 AM

Affirmative. Tuned by testing all the time. And it was an 8 inch aero.

ever tried the box all the way to the back? against the back hatch, still with the sub forward and port to the side.

Only tried that with the 2cf box and the score went down. Seems like the loudest position is with the box placed like in the picture.

my concern is you are not using all of the air in the back there. seems like behind the box is dead air.

try sub foward and port back

Will give it a go in the next few days, I'll take the 2cf box again, compare and try some orientations again.

Thank you so far !

8" port was to much in my car with a single 12. 6" seems to have worked better. I was clamping around 3.5k with this setup, and one coil has been reading funny. Needs a recone.

***link doesn't work. Search for "150.6 single 12" in youtube.
