My quest to 150db's in a family Windstar...
 

My goal is to break 150 in the back of our family minivan (single batt, street C setup, behind 3rd row seating).

I was running 3 12" JLw6v2's and hitting 144.2- 144.5. After many different attempts to make them louder I gave up... :ohwell: They sounded real nice though, just not enough for a minivan trying to hit 150.

So, I got my hands on 2 15" TF Ones.

Running ONE SUB and just getting my termlab (no previous testing) I hit:

Then I got some recones (Thanks Yuli) for my TF Ones so I could run a different load. This was the first test with gains ALL the way down. I was still in the break in period.

Then one of my Youtube subscribers complained that I only gained .6 with a second sub, so I turned my gain up to normal (half gain) for burping and learned something about wavelength patterns... found a new peak @ 47hz

Then I made a flare for my port and a few more adjustments to accommodate the flare length, and it looks to have been a nice little gain Mr. Jalat. :cheeky4: lol STILL at 47hz on less than 2K.

3db's to go. So close, yet soooo far. lol Next will be adding an extension to the center port divider (just to see if it helps any), removing some internal air space, which I think will be a loss. Then, I need to put my other 2nd row seat in cause the rules say I have to, but I think that might be a gain when it's flipped down. :dunno: :sly:

I might try to get the family to hold the van together for me sometime this weekend and see if that will gain me anything.... the rear side windows flap like crazy, lol

150 HERE I COME, one way or another, lol :smilie_da Frankenclosure will be starting in 2 weeks....

turn the gains to 3/4 and test from there
its not so good to test on half power
results will become different then on full power

other thing i would do is take out the wood that is inside your port
make it 1 box with 1 port

get the passage from box to port also nice and smoothed out like its 1 piece ,

Thanks for the advice. :) I plan to make a new enclosure with subs on passenger side and port on driver next. This is my daily enclosure. The flare is designed for my new box. I just wanted to try it on this one. ;)

I've tried turning my gains to 3/4 and I lose about .5 db. Tested about 30 times with different gain settings. My battery is only a cheap ass crappy tire eliminator and I only have one run of 2/0 right now. lol My deck has 4V line levels.

I'll try different gain levels again after I get a better battery and/or more wire. As soon as I get the van to 150, I'm pulling it all out anyway and doing a '92 Marquis Street Max build. :smilie_da

you know I've heard that with the same car, subs and box, doubling your power gives you a gain of approximately 3 db. this was proven to me when I switched amps from my kenwood to my crunch. 138s to 142s. same box, different amp. the extra db I chalk up to sub change.

oh, and when I did the the 46 I learned that loading plays a huge role. so does putting my back seat down, slide my passenger seat forward, visors down. I was going to put my middle seats down and then a piece of plywood across the two benches to keep anything from getting lost in the legroom areas, but then I got lazy. but still, good stuff Paul.

I know I'll gain with more power, I'm still under 2K. It's the final straw. I just want to get as loud as possible before I add more power. I like the wood over seats idea, I wonder if it would be legal in dB Drag??... :dunno:

why the hell not? if its behind the b pillar who gives a damn? what if you're a flooring guy on a job site and you're one sheet short and gotta run to home depot because you're the guy with the folding seats? or even just use cardboard. if its supposed to be street legal then I don't see it as a problem, and it certainly does not alter the volume of the vehicle. what needs to be adressed is why street classes have to run with the car off but street stock can have the car on and running at 16 volts. who the hell runs street stock with 16 volts???

You do know that once you add more power all your testing goes out the window and you'll have to start from scratch again right. ie. your frequency will change right off the back once you add more power.:smokin:
