Some advice on subs?

I've decided that I really don't care for the 2 10" Type Rs in the sealed enclosure. They're too tight, even for the metal/rock I tend to listen to. I don't want to shake the neighborhood, but want something with a bit more pound to them. I avoided a ported box because I didn't want the bass to be 'muddy', especially since I like drums.

Also don't know if I should look at 12s this time around, or if that'll be just too much for me.

So I don't know where to begin. . .I'm no expert on brands at all, except that I really like Alpine's Type R components, which are up front. My subs are currently powered by a JL JX1000.1. In terms of budget, well, was hoping to keep new subs/enclosure under 500 used, but don't even know if that's realisistic.

Advice on brands/models?

Can't you simply build a new, ported enclosure for the Type R 10's?

I agree with audio1der, build a bigger ported box for those 10's and you'll get the pound you want. Also since you say they're too tight the port should take the tightness out of them a bit, and give you the decibel gain you're looking for.

I realize you stated you don't like vented enclosures, BUT, if you build a vented enclosure and tune the box to 40hz you will be amazed at the output for the style of music you listen to. Use your alpine woofers you'll be fine. I've built many boxes for customers who listen to this style of music and they were happy with the result.

Okay, I'm up for trying to build a vented enclosure for them. I'm handy, but I have tried using the various enclosure design programs on the web and while many find them easy to use, I find them confusing as hell. If I had dimensions to build from, I'd have no problem.

Is there an easy way to design a good vented enclosure for them that I'm missing?

Thanks for your advice.

What year and make of vehicle is this going into? I can help you design the box. Can you give me the model number of the woofers? how old are these woofers?

Thanks so much. They're Alpine Type R SWR-1022D. Got two of them. Right now, they're in a box unpartitioned, sealed, at .8 cubes per sub and I'm really unhappy with their versatility. They sound great on some songs, but on most (especially rock) I could use more, just really worried about muddy sounding bass.

The car is an 03 Nissan Altima.

Jay have you got the measurements I asked you for in the PM I sent you?

mommjomma 03-17-2012 02:00 PM

The boxes on the Alpine support site are designed by a fellow by the name of Jason Kemmerer, he is the engineer behid the woofers you have. This isnt to say the above box isnt good, but more to say that those that dont like the enginners box design have probobly built it improperly or something else along those tlines.

this has nothing to do with what the alpine representatives have designed this has to do with tuning a box to what the customer listening needs are. Not all manufactorer box specs are what the consumers listening needs are.
