SPL Box Help
Ok, im just runnign through my plans for my first spl based box. This is going to be the first box i build for SPL and mess with it from there.
I will be entering SS 1-2 NW.
I just have a few questions, someone told me that it is a good thing to have subs passenger side and port driver side, and also to make the port as many square inches as i could. so i have based my design on that.
My question is about port size. Right know as it sits my box will be 12.38 ft3 tuned to 49hz with 323 in2 of port, is this to much port do you think?
Also sub position and wat not, is sub pass and port driver side the best place to start. any help would be greatly apreciated, since i just realised (i forgot) the first show is febuary 11th...so i have a lot of building to do. might not have it done by then, bull ill show up with my daily box if i need to.
One last question for now, on the febuary 11th show will i need to have an out of car deck hooked up. in the rules i read it says that if you sit in the car at over 140 db that your score only counts as 140....at least thats what i thought i read...if ou could clear that up that would be awsome too.
Thanks in advance.

hey everyone, sorry to be a little pushy but i really need to get started on this box. i am very confused...from wat i got from zzzzzzzzz's reply it sounds like to do the port at 323 in2 or bigger, and on another forum they said 323 is way to big and to try 1.5 cuft per driver with 100in2 of port...i am so confused and no one is answering after there firsat posts, they just say something and disapear, with no explanations or anything.
If someone could point me in the right direction or a good starting place or anything, just with an explanation that would be awsome....also a question about the feb 11th show wich i am attending, itll be my first show ever. will i need to have an out of car deck hooked up. in the rules i read it says that if you sit in the car at over 140 db that your score only counts as 140....at least thats what i thought i read...if you could clear that up that would be awsome too.
thnx again, and sorry if im being impatiant, i gotta get crackin on this stuff, or it will never get done...lol

are you doing it from the trunk of your 93 Grand Marquis or did you remove back seats and put the box there?
yah, subs on pass side, port on driver side. in a no wall set up port seems to be as big as possible...........given you have a vehicle where a 'standard' no wall box will work. if you got a trunk its a diff story. meter would be a very helpful tool as this is our first box. with a meter you'd be able to make the port as big as possible and just test while making it smaller and see if you gain or lose spl. once again tho, if you are doing it from the trunk of a trunk car then that process would be a pain in the neck.
for the show on the 11th you would probably be allowed to stay in your car and not get cut off at 140 db.

thnx a lot man, apreciate the feedback...i have removed my back seat, and the trunk will be more or less sealed off, so preasure hopefully wont travel behind there..
as for the port, febuary 11th will be the first i attend, so should i make the port as big as possible and see how it goes cuz its harder to make it bigger then to make it smaller for the next show?..the event will be my first test, but i plan on putting some time into this, so id probably come down to the shop you set up to use the meter the next week or somehting.
is there anyhting i should bring with me to make the port smaller if needed?
and as for the 140 cut off, i have another deck, im just looking for another line driver for the rear(got a cheap deck for the trunk, only 2.5v) tjhats why i was wondering if ill need to bring it or not....
thnx again for your help man.

so is the box in the trunk or where the back seats used to be?
to adjust the port just cut some mdf peices that are as tall as the port and as long as one of the sides. then you'd just screw the peice onto the side of the port and take out some sq inches. you'd need a number of peices so you can make the port narrower at least some inches.

yea, sorry man, the sub box is going were the back seat was...ill be sure to cut some extra peices of mdf to shorten the port if needed..
so looks like ill be doing 323 in2 of port...im not to concerned if i dont do 160 dbs at the show(yea right...lol) but it will be a starting point, and ill probably be down at the spl facility u set up a few times to try and get the box right.
thnx again man

hey just wondering cause someone i was talking to told me that 12.38 cuft was way to big and 323 in2 was way to big...the guy told me that 3 ft3 was even to big for each driver he said that he uses 1.7cuft per driver and less then 50in2 of port per driver. i thought this was a little odd, but i reall know nothing...is 12.38 cuft to big for 2 15's?...i can make it smaller thats just the biggest i can posibly get out of it with double layers of mdf.
thnx again man...thats wat i meant about making the port less wide...not shorter...my bad...thnx a lot tho man...
