SPL car build rules
 

I'm an SQ guy these days and havent competed in SPL since the late 90's. Back in the day the basic rules I followed were to find the resonance of the car and build your box around that. Also taking into consideration front ard rear phase of the woofer. But I know it's a little different these days. I dont plan on getting back into SPL but I still want to know what the SPL guys have learned since I was last around.

So what are basic rules these days?

Well the goal maintains the same after all the years. Basically its about building the loudest stereo you can but still getting into the "smallest" class possible. So really it comes down to effcientcy. Box design is a HUGE part of it. Making sure your electrical is up to snuff and you have enough runs of 0/1 to support your amps. Coil congiuration also plays a role as well as the type of vechile your using.

Even a few years ago, the number of people who owned a meter was very less than it is today, pretty much every serious competitor owns one these days

Testing is expected, but where do you start today. And what designs are considerd best (best may be a bad word). Back when I had my CRX there where theorys on proper back pressure for woofers where today guy use sono tube that would have little to no back pressure on the sub. I guess it's things like that that have changed and I'm out of touch with.

My old CRX had 6 10" subs and 800watts (that was a lot for my time). The best I could do was 156db and change. Today, that would be OK, but cirtenly not great.

I think the sensors they used back then were really different. I'm not sure how that score would compare with todays sensors.

Still a good score though.
