So I have this extra box sitting here....3 cubes...Is this big enough for a 15"?

And if not, how come?

The one sub I've looked at calls for 5.5 cubes ported..Is coming down in the specs of a box something that could cause probs?

Well i think you should try the box out. Worst comes to worst u have to spend 40 bux to build a new one ;)

Usually the suggest box size is the one the manufacuter found worked best for the average person. A bigger box, smaller box, ported/sealed, higher tuned etc can still work great, just depends on what you are looking for.

I would go ahead and try that box out, see what u think.

Good luck,

Pretty sure the sun will not fit in a 3cube box.
Wait, is that net or gross? Hmmmm........

i would try the box out and see how u like it , box specs are for the optimum performance of the sub , if u have some spare time then just build one up on the weekend , doesnt take too long anyways

good luck

Seal it up and you should be good..

i would say that the 3 cubes should be big enough for a 15''. that's pretty big already. if it sounds like crap, just play around a little with the port size.

Run the specs on a subwoofer box modeling program. 3 cubes is huge. I've found that by modifying the port, you can maniputlate how a sub will operate in a 3 cub. box to act like one in a 5 cub. box. And that way you get to model in real-time exactly what the sub will do. I've found that when a sub is in too big of a box, it'll over-excursion itself through a given frequency band. Usually a 15 hz window, around the subs Fs.
I've seen a few subs that require even a bigger box when it is sealed, then if it is just ported. so its best to know exactly what your getting yourself into

the 3cuft box should be perfect with a
4"round x 12" long port
