I am using the NCH tone generator and was wondering what the best options were.

I am trying a mono, linear sweep, sine.

5 second intervals 35-40hz, 40-45hz, 45-50hz, 50-55hz

Kicker recommends 37hz as per their pdf file. The chart (same pdf file) show it peaking between 45-50hz though??.

I don't have access to a mic or sensor so am gonna play it by ear......sorta.

BTW the box is slot ported and is 3.25 cuft. I used the box design their website had with the sub front firing with a front firing slot port. I used a 90 degree port with all edges rounded and followed the rule of extending the port half the measurement of the port height. I n this case 1.5" longer.

I don't have time to build a new box before the event so I want to do the best I can with what I gots.

Advice will be appreciated.

P.S. Pages 15 and 27. Page 15 box design with Page 27 for perimeter measurements.

Hey Joe, when I use that tone generator I made a disc that did a sweep, say from 30-55hz, and I also did individual tracks that were about 10 seconds each, from say 35-50hz. That is the best way, run each track until you find the one that seems loudest in your ride, if that is what you are trying to do.....

if it's tuned to 37hz, burp it @ 43-44hz.
tone generators are not permitted for db drags.

You are da man.

The first thing i tried at yesterdays DBDrag event at CarRox Audio (in Prince George) was to make the exact same run I did at the Surrey Visions show. I used the same track, same volume, same settings and guess what....

The Termlab sensor is VERY accurate. I scored the exact same 133.7 (not a great score mind you but it's a new start). Altitude, weather conditions made no difference. The guy setting up the sensors on the glass even dropped the main box on the pavement from about a 3' height. Shoulda seen the look on Mikes face

Using KickerColts recommendation of 43-44hz I used the DBDrag CD and started at 40hz and burped through to 46hz. I found out from Mike (Bisson) that my score peaked about 3/4 of the way through my run.

However I forgot that I left my lights on and had depleted my battery a wee bit by the time I got to the 43-44hz but none-the-less increased my score to 136.0.

A 2.3 db increase and I have already proven to myself I gain another .2db when my extended cab glass is held. Although no-one held them for me at this event I lost by that .2db to another competitor with a Honda Accord and a JL 13W7 running off a JL 500/1. We wanted a friendly grudge match but he popped something in his next round and was done for the day.

It was a good event. although the rain put a damper on things, things went smoothly and now I only have to tweak a few things to get ready for Andre's show next weekend in Kelowna.

This 2004 STS Cadillac is one of our clients vehicles and Marco's creation with a little bit of help from me on design. It is not completed but we wanted to see what it would do. We ended up with a 138.7 running a 30-60 sweep but it was the only vehicle in the SuperStreet 1-2 and with time constraints only made the one run. The box is not sealed yet as you can see by the pics and we still have some trim panels to make as well as a new lexan floor.

P.S. Don't mind the Jose Quiero name on the album. It is me. Just some @ssclowns at work thought it would be funny to input my information when I left the computer to answer the phone.

I lost about 2 dozen pics as I was transfering them to the computer when my batteries died. I will no longer choose "delete as pictures are transfered" setting on my camera software.

FYI the NCH tones generator does not create tones at a 0 db, rather they are created at -12 db so...they are pretty much useless for setting gains, or really using them for competition.

Lethal 06-06-2004 04:29 PM

I didn't use it for competition. I just got my DBDrag CD which had the tones on it. I was just trying to test ahead of time by ear but was unsure of how to set up the NCH Tone Generator. With LBKC's help I have it pretty much figured out.
