Too much power?

A buddy of mine just picked up a pair of Alpine type S 12" subs (single 4 ohm) 300 rms

he is currently running them on an 800 watt amp at 2 ohm, with the power exceding the rms by 100wrms per sub could that do damage to his subs?

normally i would tell him just not to run them full tilt for very long, but i have never used an alpine sub, i dont know if they are underrated or, can just take a beating.

thanks in advance.

He's probably going to be fine...

With impedence rise the amp is probably not actually seeing a 2Ohm load so it wouldn't put out the full 800w.

Plus, with music being dynamic, he probably won't get to the 800w very often.

Basically... as long as he's not too crazy with the volume knob he should be fine. :smilie_da

he should definatly be fine in the short term..... but for prolonged use he could run into trouble, especially if the amp does a little more then 800... (what amp is it ?)

just warn him to be a lil carefull if pounding for more then an hour or so....

he is currently using my old amp due to me car being worked on, its an exile 1200.1,

also, i went over and helped him set the gain on the amp and stuff, at 2ohms his lights are dimming pretty bad, i am just wondering if that drop in voltage is capable of damaging the subs or the amp? or if it will just not give thefull output he should be getting.

ps, i shoud have added, when we set the gain the deck was at 40/62 for volume, so that is the reference point

thanks again
