What 2.5" VC subs for Street Stock B ??

Well, since the plan for me and my bro's mini team originally consisted of bassrace competing only, after some though, we figured if we can swing it, we should at least finish the van build to suit a DBdrag class too.:smilie_da for a little more to do at the shows..

After alot of reading on termpro, we've found (to the best of my ability)that the only thing keeping us out of Street stock B (where us noobs belong anyhow..lol) is our 3" voicecoil subs.
Since the 3" voicecoil subs and the bigger amp we'll be getting will eventually be going into my car build(when it starts:eyes:) we figure for the 2k in the van now, 2.5" coils should be fine, and put us in a dbdrag class more suited to us than street C and the SUPER LOUD cars in that class!!!

Soooo. if you were gonna choose 3 - 2.5 " voicecoil subs to run in dbdrag, bassrace and street driving, on <2k using a 7 cube PSP ported box box tuned to 44hz , what would you use?

Father Yuli 12-10-2010 07:39 AM

check PM.

the only thing is that box is way too big for street stock

DeadlySones 12-10-2010 08:19 AM

Are TFX 2.5" coils?

jalat 12-10-2010 10:06 AM

three 10" type r's

I wasn't sure what you meant at first?? Its under 24" high, fits behind the 3rd row(even seats up) , thought it was a rules thing...
Then I checked the recommended ported box size for some 2.5" voice coil subs.

all less than 2 cubes per sub :eyes: gotcha

Type R's
AQ SDC

I was looking up Kicker L5's , they have the same power handling as the 2.5" VC subs I looked at ( Type R, AQ SDC) but the recommended ported box size is the in the "right" size BUT... I can't seem to find anything on it's voice coil diameter, even in the PDF manual!!
Anyone here know?:smokin:

Did notice that Digital Designs have some beefy looking 2.5" VC subs.
Haven't really looked them up too much yet... ie... look expensive....lol

We also need dual 2 ohm coils for our for our planned setup, I mention this because the AQ SDC only seems to come in 4 ohm...

So unless I want to scrap(lol yeah right!!!) the new box I need to find a 2.5 inch dia. dual 2 ohm voice coil sub, that has a recommended ported box size of no smaller than 2.25 cubes...

Only found one even close yet, gotta find out about the L5's voice coil!!!!

Any new thoughts guys?

Father Yuli 12-10-2010 02:52 PM

L5 is 2.5 inch coil

i think older L7's were as well, new ones might be too

DeadlySones 12-10-2010 02:54 PM

I think TFX are available in dual 2???

There is no limit on voice coil size for street stock. Just no competition grade subs. American bass xfl subs are a great sub and legal fir street stock. The price is pretty good for what you get.

unholysavage 12-11-2010 12:52 AM

"competition grade" - wtf does that even mean? seriously.
it wasn't that many years ago that people set SPL records with L7s in the street classes, how are they no longer considered "competition grade"?

Guess I'll have to ask a judge.:dunno:
I remembered reading somewhere about the " consumer grade " subs, so I did a lil search onsite...Check it out, what do you think?

How the heck do you post a clickable link...teach meeeeee:eyes:

JD- I checked those out, sick numbers!!! the Sundown specs seems to say that they can have up to 2.25cubes, but they mention handling the big box size at lower power levels.
Not sure if 600 wrms is considered "low" to Sundown , as they're rated at 600wrms. But I do know Sundown should handle MUCH more but....??

So far the kicker L5's have my interest the most , less than $500 for 3 , should work well in my current box, gives me lotsa cone area.

The one thing I don't like is it is not reconeable , I kinda liked reconing. However the price of the whole L5 is the price of my last recone....lol
Throw-away subs I guess...:thumbsdow

DS- Is the TFX one of Yuli creations?

Still interested in other possible options... I'll check out American Bass JB.

Jwb_Spl 12-11-2010 08:31 AM

People used xfls during the whole season in street stock. The are a solid subs but the American xd series is louder on low power because the suspension isn't as stiff and the soft parts are lighter.

They changed it from competition grade to 2.5" coils.

The TFXs are Yuli's evil doing. If you can get the TFX's go with them, I ran 2, they're wicked.

completely forgot about the SA line.

Haunz 12-11-2010 12:55 PM

The JL W6V1 15s are a nice sub with an 8-layer 2.5" voice coil.. they will easilly hang with many subs that use a 3 inch coil...

Not sure where you could find any though...

600 would be low then...lol:cheeky4:
I was surprised when I found the Sundowns at woofersetc. for only 190.00 each.. I was excepting them to far outprice the kickers. Only about $40 difference per sub!!
guess they make the short list ..
Wonder if they have recones?

Fresh - Thanks for the confirmation. I may ask Yuli about them, though I'm not sure that with the work he puts in them, that he could make them in my price range....:dunno:

Haunz- thanks for the input bro, I'm not a fan of JL..(probably cause I can't afford it...lol)

JWB- I did find an AB sub with a 2.5" VC.. the XD12 ... 450wrms... Wonder if they would take alot more like the sundowns apparently do??

So I have Kicker L5s, Sundown SA-12s and perhaps AB xd12s on the short list. Reads like a good list:thumbsup: thanks guys!!

Need to check on the XD12 price, any approx. cost JWB?

ssackett 01-01-2011 07:12 PM

Sundown SA's for sure :D
