why STreet Stock sucks
ok i had a lot of time to think while at work today and basically this is my conclusion of street stock so far.
I also posted this on the term pro forums.
Ok basically this is my problem with street stock and its brand limitations. This is my first year ever competing and i only decided to compete because of these classes, and now guess what? I cant compete! Why cant i compete? because i have Atomic in my car. A few months ago i walked into a shop out of the blue and said "my stereo isn't loud enough!" I walked out with a 10" Atomic E.L.E. and a new box. After spending some time in the shop talking to the guys I found out about new classes in dB drag, I had always wanted to compete but could never afford to run with the street guys nor did i have the know how to even begin building a competition stereo, so initially the plan was laid out to run around 2000RMS and 2 10" ELE's, and i went to my first show with the 1-10" and a DB Drive spa1000.1 which proceeded to fill my car with smoke before the event even started! Thanks to the owner of the shop i got a loaner amp and got to compete i was instantly hooked! I went strait to the db drag web site and started memorizing the rules and went back every day to see what changes had been made, then the first kick came, nothing over 1000 watts, 1000 watts isnt enough to keep me happy daily but i would be willing to buy a second amp just for competing, then i got my hands on the list and no atomic, and after spending some time talking with others in the sport it has been made clear to me that atomic will likely never be on the list.
Now what am i supposed to do? I have a shop i am loyal to that has stood behind me every step of the way, i never have to worry if i break something and cant afford to replace it immediately, the guys will take care of me, this shop happens to be the Canadian distributor of atomic so when you walk in there atomic is what they set you up with! So am i supposed to turn my back on the small guys, who by the way are the only really strong supporters of db drag in the Vancouver and surrounding area, they are the ones putting on the shows, they are the ones pushing the sport and trying to make it grow, sell all my crap and go to some big box store and give all my money to some guy who thinks a T.L. is a Acura? Not that I would anyway because honestly after having this sub ill never go back to some crap mass produced over hyped piece of trash that just looks pretty. It's not just me either, 90% of the cars that come out of this shop fit every part of the description of the street stock classes most are 1 or 2 12's and a 1000w amp, and not one of them can compete in street stock! We can compete locally and thats it, there is no point in running for points because we cant compete in finals with our gear, there is really no point in going to double or triple point shows because our cars are illegal so we are left with three choices really. 1 - compete locally where we can get away with it, 2 - move up to street and get hammered on like crazy! or the third and most likely, just not bother...
I personally try to get everyone I meet that has a stereo to come out and compete and think its going to be rather odd when they show up and im just sitting there watching because my car isnt legal, I understand you wanting to stick to brands that support db drag but i see no reason to isolate people because they choose to run a certain brand, basically by putting the brand limitations on the class you are isolating people like myself who just happen to run good gear and you have placed me in the position that has kept new people from coming out and competing in the sport when these classes were designed to do just the opposite! Also with the power limits 1000 watts is nothing these days we all know that and while i can see A being limited to it why wouldn't B be twice the power? kind of like being able to run 2 amps in street B? I know alot of people running over 1000 watt amps in daily driven cars that had never planned on competing and now wont be competing because they aren't going to go by a smaller amp just to drag once in a while.
I will not turn my back on the guys that have been so good to me, no decent person would! but i do want to compete. So here i sit, having to some how build a street level car. A car that will easily cost four times as much money to put together, money i just dont have so I guess i get to spend a year sitting on the sidelines watching while i save and slowly buy the gear for street one piece at a time and hopefully by next year what i bought this year will still allow me to be competitive though with the way the street classes are that seems highly unlikely. This is not some sob story, not me whining, Im just a normal guy with a normal stereo built to play metal, and play it really loud! I just happen to like competing, and now because i didnt buy the right brand, i get to either not compete or get eliminated in the first round of every show by 7-10db.
Thanks.
