Maybe on the new Alpines that would work, but it would wreak havoc for my 7949.
Mine was setup as such:
BBE - OFF
Loud - OFF
Bass - +2 or +0
Sub level +5
I never would have the sub level far beyond +5 because it would distort at ANY level. No other setting made the deck clip. It was like something was wrong with the sub level.

</font>
that's EXACTLY it! on the old ones it was better for me to leave everything flat, but on the new ones, i need to crank it all.. it's rather anoying!
Alpine's new decks use what I call a "reverse gain" on their sub output RCA's. When you have it at +15, you're actually getting the voltage output they state on the box (ex: 4 volt out put is at +15 on sub out).
The trick in my eyes is to turn up the volume on the deck until you're around max voltage output from the deck before it clips. I tried several different Alpine decks in my Civic and ended up using their bottom of the line deck with a line driver. I maxed out the output voltage of the deck (to just before clipping point) and then adjusted the line driver to the output voltage I wanted to go into the amps.
Every amp is different as to how much voltage input it will take before it starts to crap out, so you'll have to adjust your input gain on the amp accordingly. Just remember to start with the gain on the amp at its lowest setting ( basically turned off), adjust your deck and line driver outputs, then turn the gain up a little at a time until you see about 75 volts AC coming out of the speaker outputs of the amp (using a multimeter).
Once you've done this, you'll have the maximum potential out of your deck, line driver and amp. The next step is to make sure your subs will handle the power!
Hope this helps...
