15" upgrade

Alright folks, switchin things up again before the spring hits. Options are as follows:

Rockford Fosgate T2D2 15.... Current model-1200rms
Sundown Zv3 15..................Current model-1500rms (conservative)

Both can be had for the same price and the enclosure I have is well tailored to both. Sub will running off my SAZ-1500D v2. Looking for great output as well as musicality. Box is 3.5 net before displacement of either sub and tuned to 29 Hz. Anyone with RELIABLE experience or CONSTRUCTIVE input, please help me out. Currently running a single SA-15 but need more output. My first choice was an AA Havoc 15 but my box is a tad to small to make that sub happy so these are my options. Need to pull the trigger on this asap so quick responses are much appreciated.

I would go with the Zv3 even though it can take more power than you have available, it will compliment your box better than the r/f and also perform better at that tuning frequency.

Thanks Sonic.... Have you had the pleasure of using either of them. Leaning towards the Z cuz i am a bit of a sundown nut hugger..lol! Just that everywhere i read, guys are saying the Z's are laughing at 2k and anything less would be pointless. I kinda believe them cuz my Sa 15 takes around 1200 rms with relatively no strain. Thought that maybe i could get similar results out of the t2 with the xtra power i have on tap.

Sonic 02-11-2013 11:32 PM

Havent had personal experience witth the Z, I based my recommendation on the box and more so it's tuning frequency and the numerous reviews online. I know you are limited on power but, but here is the advantage..you can always upgrade the amp, rather than having to upgrade both the amp and sub ..lol...

It's not that easy to beat that sa-15 on output with the same power.

momax_powers 02-12-2013 04:26 AM

definitely the z...ive had the T2 12 before and was let down...u still have the other sa for sale txt me i have a few more options you should look into

wasted911 02-12-2013 09:26 AM

If it were me (I have no experience with either) I would hands down go with the sundown. Much more reputable as a bullet proof sub vs the rockford.

Hey, forgot you were even on here.... lol!! I will txt you later tonight from work.

Like I said, leaning towards the Z anyway just a hefty price tag and dont intend on upping power anytime soon. To make things even more confusing, I was reccomended to check out the DC lv 4, which also suits the bill for this set up in terms of power and box requirements but dont know to much about it. Its almost half the price of the Z as well which is a GREAT bonus. Thanks for the opinions fellas, please keep em coming. First demo to the one that helps me decide... LOL!!!

The best route in my opinion is to build a better box rather than dropping coin on a new sub. What is your box size, port dimensions?

Actually, this is a great box and perfect size for my trunk. With my current sub it nets 3.5 cubes after all displacements and around 3.69 without the sub. Box is tuned to 29hz and has bracing and no 90 degree anlgles, all 45's includin the port so changing the box is not really an option but thanks for the suggestion. As much as I would love to have the Z, i think I will pass on it due to its hefty price tag and lack of power. Been looking and reading up on the DC lvl 4 and think this may be a really good option. Good match for both the amp and box and have only read good things about it. Anyone who has had any experience with them or have heard one, please feel free to chime in.

gramser57 02-12-2013 11:31 PM

You do realise if you do upgrade your sub you will need a new box, your current port area is small and those subs will need lots of port area especially the LVL 4.

It might just be me, but I don't see his port area stated ANYWHERE in this thread.

The DC's are awesome subs. You'd be happy.

To the op have you considered Fi car audio? My last setup I had a Fi BL 15" fully loaded and it played all notes with brutal force.

Thanks for the vote of confidence for the DC. Not really a box guy so dont know how to calculate port area. I do know the dims and tuning of the box and perhapse if i posred them some one may be able to use that as refernce to determine an estimate. Dims are as follows:
H- 16"
W- 36"
D- 18.5
Tuned at 29 hz.

I sure have... Was really lookin at the Q. Thing with fi subs is that box req are too big. If i was gonna do a largwr box i would have gone with the Aa havoc. Really like what i hear about those subs and nobody here has em. Again, thanks for the suggestions... Now just waitin for a good reason from anyone not to go for the dc... Lol So far only good things and if it stays like that, placin the ordwr tomorrow morn.

I had a pair of lvl 2's and lvl 3's, in my experience DC's don't like the lows unless you build a huge box for them. Also noticed they don't like to be overpowered and would make a popping noise when bottoming out lol

How wide is your port? I can figure out your total port area just need your port width.

G POUNDER 02-15-2013 01:15 AM

Port width is 3" and Height is 14.5 if im not mistaken. Got me second guessing this DC... Your the 1st person to have any subjective input, but the fact that you have used them in what looks to be a very nice box, says alot, so thanks for that.

No worries I'm just trying to help you out so you can avoid dumping lots of money into a subwoofer and realise it sounds like poop because its in the wrong enclosure.

So to better visualise your enclosure and how its performing I punched in your box stats in Winisd. The green line represents your current box with the SA-15. Since DC audio doesn't list T/S parameters for the LVL 4's I went with the Sundown Zv.3 and notice how flat it plays and doesn't seem to get loud up until 40hz but to me looks quiet

If you were to build a new box for the SA-15 that is 36" wide 16" high and 18.5" depth but instead of a slot port went with a single 6" diameter by 15" length aeroport the final specs would be 4.5 cubic ft. tuned to 29hz and thats what the blue line represents. Between 25hz - 40hz you gain alot of output especially 40hz where its almost +3db which to the human ear is equivalent to almost twice as loud. HTH

+3db which to the human ear is equivalent to almost twice as loud.
10db is double perceived loudness. 3db is like doubling the amp power.

That blue line will seriously rearrange your fillings.

Damn you gramser57!!!! LMAO!! Where the hell were you when i was tryin to build a box for my 2 15's?? lol.... Seriously though, thanks a bunch for your help. Your input has been both eye opening and informative. Unfortunately i read your last post too late as i had already placed my order for the lvl 4. Friend of mine was also making a purchase and got us an AWSOME deal. Now i know im getting ahead of myself but just wanna cover my bases. CANNOT find a decent box builder locally. Was hoping you could help me with a box build for 2 SA-15's?? Can provide you with all the info you need if you would be willing. Can pm you my email and we can chat.... Also would like to thank all who have submitted replies to this thread. Nice to know there is somwhere to go for help when needed. Just in case this DC doesn't work out I will still have my 15's to try a build for again. Just gonna have to take 1 back from my step son and give him the DC but he will be fine...lol

Yes i did... They were 12's and the box they were in was too small. Tried 10" and 12" woofers before of all kinds of brands and realized quickly tham just a huge fan of 15's. In my car they just sound right i guess. Was never really impressed with other size drivers in my car. In other peoples ride, I have heard both 10's ad 12's that soung great but my damn Accord only sounds good with a 15. Funny how that is but it is...
