2010 Tacoma Access Cab Install Ideas
 

Hey everyone,
I'm a new member and have been tossing ideas of what to do for an install for my new truck. So far I have put the INA-900 Alpine head unit in my dash along with bluetooth, sirius and Ipod connector. I love the deck and now want to spend some money to upgrade my sound. I have priced out and picked the following setup:
Hertz MLK 165 for the front speakers
Alpine PDXF6
Dynamat truck

Eventually I will add: (once I save up more money!)
Alpine PDXM12
4 x 8" kicker comp subs in a custom fiberglass box under the rear seats.

I want a very high quality sound quality system that will also be loud and impress people with clarity and spl. I listen to a wide varity of music but mainly rock (metallica, tool, avenged sevenfold, disturbed) and sometimes mainstream and some eminem.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Criticisms?

Throw Morel into the mix for the speakers. You will need a mounting template for the front door speakers as they are 6x9" right now. Lots of deadening in the doors.

What would be a comparable model and price to the hertz speakers I picked? Also, I was told that for the music I listen to, a 2 way system would probably sound better than a 3 way system.

Oh yeah? Did they explain why, cuz that's an interesting statement.

Maybe they meant "for the music you listen to, it's not worth spending the money on 3ways over 2ways"? I'm not knocking your choice of music, but it's true.

The MLKs are a fine speaker - actually all of your gear pics look like they will work great.

yeah, you have very good equipment...other brands and models may just sound different, but not necessarily better. I would audition as much as possible prior to choosing if i was you..you may like the sound of one brand over another. Otherwise get it installed properly and it'll sound great.

They said that from their experience, with the music I listen to, the 3-way systems weren't as fast and didnt sound as nice as a 2-way. This was mainly pertaining to the fast drums and riffs in the bands like Tool. I have had Focal's before and loved them, but I couldnt listen to them that long without my ears hurting. From what I understand and have been told, the Hertz shouldn't cause that.
Would it be worth it to go up in the hertz lineup? Or what else could I do to get the best sound?

well if ear fatigue is an issue, you may want to listen to the Morels, they are known for their smooth, more laid back highs. I listen to some your type of music too, but i like a slightly brighter tweeter (not harsh...sparkling). I have owned Morel and I love their sound for quiet listening environments, but I prefer my JBL's for in car use as it's closer to concert sound for me, and I rarely listen to music in my car when it's not driving. As far as the 3ways not responding as quickly...that's bull shizzle! If anything they should be better able to respond as each driver handles a smaller band of frequencies that they are designed to handle much better than a single driver can. Sounds like they just want to sell you what they carry or make the most profit on. Don't get me wrong though, a good 2 way can sound just as good or better than a 3 way, but it's mostly due to being easier to set up properly, particularly in an automobile.

Thanks a lot! So what level Morel's would be equivalent in both price and quality to the Hertz MLK 165? Also, I should have mentioned this earlier, the amp and front speakers will be run using the deck's crossovers and 4 RCA outputs. 2 for each side (1 channel for 6.5" and 1 channel for tweeter on each side). Imprint will also be done as well. I had it done in my last truck with my focal's and I absolutely loved it. Therefore, because of the way we will be running it, the included crossovers wont be used or needed. I don't know if that makes a difference in picking between hertz or focal or morel, but just mentioning this.
And from what I understand, it would be a little bit more difficult to install the 3 way in terms of running the amp and setting up crossovers and then having to use the included crossovers as well. Does any of that make sense?

The Tacomas have a huge door opening. You should strongly consider putting a 8" in the doors. You don't have to cut anything, just build a baffel and bolt it in! IT makes a dramatic increase in your upfront bass and will really bring you install alive. There is no replacement for displacement!
