I used to run (4) 8 inch subs in my altima. They hit really hard...worked great. I have used 10" and 12" subs in varying arrangements. Currently, i am a fan of 12", but that is not to say that there is anything wrong with 8" at all. I might come down to your amplifier situation, load, or installation space...etc etc. Sometimes the car will yield itself to different performance depending on the sub and its configuation in the car, but if you are just deciding on the sub well,.....you might have to consider the output of two 8" instead of a single 12". What will the load be on the amp? As for being truer well, the questions becomes....what is true to you?

Good luck!

8's are cool, need a few of them to get the low-end of a 12 though.

I like 1 12 in a small box. put some decent power to it and you'll be happy. Tight and accurate but also get good bottom end.

why not use 8's as mid bass and a single 12 for sub. Crossover your 8's to play 50Hz and up.

I guess the obvious disadvantage of 8's over a larger driver is cost, as multiple 8's can cost more than a single 12 or 15. They can all sound great, if properly set up.
