Unhappy

It is a sad day for me. A couple of weeks ago the display on my C90 just stoped. The unit itself still works (radio etc.), you just can't see anything. So I took it to a sony repair outlet. After a few days of investigation they came back telling me that the display control chip is done, a new one plus labour would be $250. Now to make matters worse, they also said that they cannot confirm that the faceplate is fine until the display control is fixed, and if a new faceplate was also required, it would be an additional $560!

Now I am faced with what to do. I am not interested in potentially shelling out over 800 bones to repair it, unless there is someone in the mississauga/milton/oakville area who has a c90 that I can test my faceplate with?

Outside of that, I am faced with obtaining a new h/u, so I would be looking for suggestions. I still want high quality (I don't like crap, but who does?), but being that I mainly use my ipod in my car, extreme sq or top end D/A chips (like the c90) don't make much sense dollar wise. I also liked the sleak look of the c90. Any suggestions?

renfrey.

I'm in the Yonge and Steeles are and have a C90 in my car if you wanted to test your faceplate out

otherwise, I really like the Denfords for a nice looking straightforward deck,

I'm also a big fan of the older Eclipse decks, you know, the ones with the pretty crappy displays

but hey, that's me

renfrey, where was the sony repair outlet that you took the C90 to? My C90 has been acting up latey (intermitent cracking noises when I play a CD) and I want to get it looked at but have no idea where to take it since I am in Waterloo.

Grey:
I ran in to the same issue living in the Milton area. The one I took it to was Apollo Electronics at Steeles and Weston in Woodbridge in the GTA. They were very honest and did not try to BS me in any way....I am a technologist as well, so I was able to check up on their estimate of what is broken. The only reason I choose them is because they are near my work. Sorry to say this, but a quick check of sony.ca shows that they are the closest to you as well. You could drop it off at a sony store, but that will most deffinetly take longer and cost more then the $30 estimate that I paid for. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Edgar:
I would actually like to hook up with you to check my face plate. Can you PM me? I will PM you as well actually.

Thanks fir the info renfrey. When my deck craps out I'll take it there. But did Apollo fix the deck for you or did the Sony store?

Sorry for the late reply guys.

Well I picked up my busted up deck from Apollo, and thought that i might take a wack at it myself. I sourced out the chip and replaced it. Which I must say was the most difficult and lengthy soldering I have ever done. To my surprise though, it worked!!

It was very risky for me to do that, but it did save me a ton of money which I was not willing to spend on a repair.

Grey: Apollo only diagnosed the problem and told me exactly what was needed to be repaired. I then took the deck back at that point.

Edgar: Got your pm...thank you very much for the offer, I do appreciate it, but it seems to be working fine now. I just have to hope that it stays that way!

If anyone needs any info regarding this repair, just let me know and I will be glad to help!

renfrey.
