Comp recommendations?
#1
I'm am looking to up my SQ with a budget of around $600. The Fanatix are ok for now, but seem a tad too harsh for my liking.
Anybody have advice for a nice 6.5" comp set around 5-6 hundred, and any shop recommendations for the GTA?

i put up one vote for cdt audio... will give you a softer, more laid-back sound if you find those rf's harsh...
someone by the name of battyrida deals with cdt audio on this board... hes probably your best bet with the cdts...

I think the Dynaudio, and JL components may be to your liking (they tend to be accurate but softer on the high frequencies than some). I like the sound, the build quality and the price is in your range. I have not heard the Morel, DLS, and CDT sets but they tend to be very highly regarded by all who hear them (up and comers).
I would steer you away from Image Dynamics and MB quart just because they have a very live HF range (they are top quality but they are a little hot in some setups).

JL Audio XR series seems fantastic. Right in your budget. Also my Alpine Type Series are in the same budget, amazing speaker for the price, way cool looking xover too.
Mike Dupius uses the JL 3 ways, his car sounds amazing...
And I use the Alpine 3 ways, and I'm right behind him

I have a pair of 6.5" AVI BSM components that fit the budget. One of the best speakers I've listened to - smooth, articulate and natural. There's real depth in the vocals and the tweet is just so silky. Ask around - there are few that know about AVI, but I'm sure they'll have good things to say. >

I'll throw another $.02 worth in for the JL XR series comps. I have the 5.25" set in my van and they sound great...
As for getting them installed, the guys at Radioactive in Burlington did a nice job on my doors, I'm sure they could help you as well...

Lots of nice components out there..
As mentioned above, CDT is an excellent choice. Fantastic performance and a reasonable price.
The focal polykevlar and utopia line of components are also terrific.
I recently picked up some new Image Dynamics CXS54 components. I havent installed them in my kick pannels yet (waiting for spring), however I have had a chance to audition them, and they are very smooth sounding components. They've got 24db/oct passives, and fairly high power handling. The cones are made of real carbon fiber too. The midbass woofers have a very flat midrange and blend beautifully with the NX30 tweeters. The off axis response is fantastic as well.
After purchasing them, I've heard all sorts of horror stories about defective ID components. I guess I was lucky to get a good pair . They are a little on the expensive side, ($300-350US), but nice none the less.
Check out some CDT models though, might be your best bet.

JL XRs are amazing components. if you want money in the bank though, I would recommend Alpine Type-X components. They have come down fantastically in price now and you can have the 6.5s for as little as $440 (list price, so you can probably save even more). The midbass is kind of tinny in my opinion but otherwise I like them quite a bit. edit: if you want to spend $600, you could probably look around a bit and find the three-ways, which are quite good.
If you want to piece together your own front stage, Morel tweeters are supposed to be fantastic (albeit pricey) and then you could probably match them up with an Adire midbass or the DD mids.
